Gender (In)Equity at Home: Gender Differences in Unpaid Work
Assignment Description: The purpose of this assignment is to stimulate critical thinking about how (unpaid) housework disproportionately impacts women, potentially leading to negative effects on their mental and physical health.
Instructions: According to the Pew Research Center (“
“), women continue to shoulder more household and childcare responsibilities compared to their male counterparts, regardless of whether women have full-time jobs. While managing a household and raising children can be fulfilling, these responsibilities often leave women overstretched, with little time for their own wellness care. Discuss the following:
- Why do you think women continue to contribute more to household and child-rearing duties?
- Why do you believe such responsibilities are not valued as much as paid work in society?
- What impact do these types of unpaid work have on women who also work outside the home, both mentally and physically?
Support your discussion with references and citations from credible sources. Submit your assignment as a 500-word Word document, double-spaced, in APA format. Include both in-text citations and a reference list formatted according to APA guidelines. For APA citation and formatting style, refer to the

Week 1 Discussion IC
Exploring Everyday Communication Models
In our first discussion, we’ll explore the intricacies of everyday communication by applying the communication models covered this weekAction, Interaction, and Transaction-to a concrete scenario.
Option 1: Personal Experience
Describe a recent conversation, highlighting key aspects. If you’re uncomfortable sharing a personal conversation, feel free to use a scenario from a movie or television show.
Option 2: Generative AI or Media Scenario
Alternatively, you can leverage generative AI to create a fictional conversation for analysis. If you choose this option, make sure to cite the AI tool used in correct APA citation. There are resources on APA citation in the Course Resources module in the classroom.
After presenting your example, choose one of the communication modelsAction, Interaction, or Transactionalthat aligns with the characteristics of the conversation. If you use a generative AI tool, it might perform the analysis for you, and that’s acceptable for this assignment. In that case, include the analysis that was generated, cite it in APA citation, and evaluate the analysis that generative AI provided. Does it seem accurate given what you learned in the weekly learning modules and textbook readings? How would you explain the communication model and how it applies to the example in your own words? Which channels of communication are missing from chats with generative AI? The primary focus of this assignment is on your understanding of the chosen model and how it can enhance your daily communication with others. While generative AI can help you come up with and even analyze examples, the work of developing and employing effective communication skills must come from you.
Here is a suggested outline for your post:
- Describe and/or quote the conversation.
- Model Application: Apply the chosen communication model to the conversation example. Discuss the characteristics of communication evident in the conversation. Explain why you believe the selected model best describes the communication dynamics in your scenario and/or cite the generative AI analysis in correct APA citation and compare it to what you learned in this weeks readings and course modules.
- Enhancing Daily Communication: Discuss how understanding and applying the chosen communication model can enhance your daily interactions with others. Consider the model’s principles and how awareness of these principles can improve the quality of communication in various contexts.
- Comparisons and Reflection: Reflect on whether the communication model aligns with or differs from your typical communication style. Compare the model’s principles with your natural tendencies and identify potential areas for improvement.
Guidelines for your peer responses:
Respond to at least two classmates by providing feedback or sharing insights:
Highlight if they effectively applied a communication model.
Comment on how their analysis deepened your understanding of effective communication.
Share your own suggestions for improving communication based on their examples. You should also respond to at least one post from your instructor.
Instructions:
To support your work, use your course and text readings. As in all assignments, cite your sources (both those from the course and any others you may use, including generative AI) in your work and provide references for the citations in APA format.
Start reviewing and responding to the postings of your classmates as early in the week as possible. Participate in the discussion by asking a question, providing a statement of clarification, providing a point of view with a rationale, challenging an aspect of the discussion, or indicating a relationship between two or more lines of reasoning in the discussion. Cite sources in your responses to other classmates.

- Images of historical events or movements
- Images of the book or publication
B. Primary Source Analysis (Chart Prompts)
You must also address the prompts from the Primary Source Analysis Chart.(attached below)
You are expected to do more than the chart.
Think of the chart as a preparation stage, not the final product.Do not submit the chart itself.
Use it as a drafting tool, then type your answers into your final submission.Required PSA Prompts:
- Where and when the primary source was created (be precise)
- The historical and cultural context of the source
(may require outside academic research using library resources) - A description of the source itself
(use specific quotes or examples) - An explanation of the meaning, message, or argument of those quotes or examples
This should be the longest section of your submission

Audre Lorde primary source analysis example (attached below) THIS IS JUST AN EXAMPLE.
Note the:
- Use of visuals
- Specific quotes
- Strong background research
- Thoughtful discussion questions
These examples are for guidance only. You are not allowed to copy or use them in your own submissions.
You are not required to submit a PowerPoint.
10. What Counts as a Primary Source? (Very Important)
You will be graded on your ability to correctly identify:
- Who the author is
- What historical period the source represents
- Example 1: Claudia Jones Documentary (week 3 content)
-
- A 1950s interview with Claudia Jones Primary source
- A documentary about Claudia Jones
- Primary source of the time the documentary was made
- Author = filmmaker, not Claudia Jones
- A play featuring an actor portraying Claudia Jones
- Primary source of the time the play was created
- Author = playwright and actor
-
- Example 2: Ida B. Wells Documentary (week 7 content)
-
- The documentary contains primary source material (e.g., Wellss writings)
- The documentary itself is not a primary source from Wellss lifetime
- To analyze Ida B. Wells as the author, you must focus on:
- Her writings
- Her speeches
- Her photographs
These distinctions matter and will affect your grade
- There should be absolutely 0% plagiarism (paper is reviewed with plagiarism/AI check)
- Please do not use so sophisticated, elegant, difficult, BOT sounding, AI generated looking word choice!!!
Requirements: Paper answering all parts
