  • Building Capacity for Compassion

Create a 910 slide PowerPoint presentation that you would be able to present to your colleagues/staff to equip them to work with families of children with autism in a compassionate way. Include the following:

    • Title slide.
    • What is autism?
    • Brief history.
    • Current issues.
    • Screening and diagnosis.
    • Early intervention process.
    • Compassionate care.
    • Resources for families.
    • References slide. (At minimum, each of this week’s readings should be cited at least once.)

Remember that slides should be succinct, readable, and visually appealing for an audience. Make sure your presentation is 910 slides long. Do not go over 10 slides. Review the following or another resource your choice.

Provide speaker’s notes (script) under each slide, writing what you would say to your audience to discuss the slide.

This is not a presentation on intervention. Rather, it should be a presentation on general autism knowledge and general process for early intervention, with a heavy emphasis on compassionate care. Intervention will come later. For this presentation, consider how would you prepare your colleagues or staff to effectively and compassionately support families of children with autism as they navigate the beginning steps in diagnosis and early intervention.

Overall, your assignment submission will be assessed on the following criteria:

    • Explain relevant characteristics, history, and current issues related to autism.
    • Summarize screening, diagnosis, and early intervention processes for autism.
    • Explain resources and strategies to help provide compassionate care for individuals with autism and their families.
    • Convey purpose in a well-organized text, incorporating appropriate evidence and tone in grammatically sound sentences.
    • Create detailed speaker’s notes for the PowerPoint using APA format and citing appropriate references.

    Additional Requirements

Your assignment should also meet the following requirements:

    • Length of submission: A 910 slide PowerPoint presentation with detailed speaker’s notes.
    • Number of references: Cite a minimum of four sources of scholarly or professional evidence. Resources should be no more than five years old.

APA formatting: Both PowerPoint slides and speaker’s notes should follow current APA style and formatting.

    Becoming a Lifelong Advocate

Ideology, politics, and the influence of values often override evidence-based policy. When there is evaluation conflict, a policy advocate must be prepared to defend their reasons for wanting to implement a policy. Because almost all proposed policies are circumscribed by politics, you should be prepared for some conflict, ranging from having your research ignored, to having the accuracy of your data questioned, to having your personal values brought into question.

Your work as a policy advocate is and should be an extension of your commitment to the social work profession. As such, it is important to continually reflect on how your actions and intentions align with the mission, values, and ethics of social work. For this Discussion, you will consider how your social change project connected with the mission of social work as described by NASW. Additionally, you will consider how your project represents the values of the social work profession.

    To Prepare

    • Read Chapter 14 of the Jansson text.
    • Review the Code of Ethics by NASW found in the Learning Resources this week.
      • Focus on the mission of social work as defined in the section Preamble.
      • Review the six core values outlined in the section Ethical Principles.
    • Review the video in the Required Media this week.
    • Consider how your Social Change Project in this course reflects the mission and values of social work. It is okay if you find that your project does not align with some aspect of the mission or valuesthis is an opportunity to reflect and consider how you can continue to strive to uphold the mission and values of the profession.

    POST

Post to your Discussion, addressing the following:

    • Explain how your Social Change Project upholds the mission of the social work profession. Cite 23 specific examples from your project in your explanation.
    • Select one core value from the NASW resource that you think is least evident in your Social Change Project. Explain your selection. Include actions you will take to better represent the value in your future advocacy work.
    • Describe additional steps you will take as a social change and policy advocate to ensure your advocacy work continues to be guided by your social work mission and values as defined by NASW.

  • H1234

Research Topic: Early American education in Philadelphia for the African American society.

    Part #1

You will find and evaluate two website articles related to your topic that are acceptable for college-level research. Use an internet search engine of your choice to find articles related to your topic. Then, write a 200-word analysis for each website article. The information below will help you find websites and explain what your analysis should include.

    Criteria for Analysis:

    • Who is writing this article? What are their qualifications?
    • What is the websites affiliation?
    • What is the sites purpose (educational, commercial, entertainment, government entity, political organization, advertising, propaganda, etc.)?
    • Do the articles contain a list of sources or references used? What kind of information does the article link to?
    • What topics are covered? Are the topics covered in depth?
    • How accurate is the information on the website? Is there anything about the website that makes you skeptical (such as too many errors, spam advertising, outdated facts or figures, bad links, etc.)?
    • What, if any, kinds of bias or slant can you detect in these articles?
    • After reviewing this criteria, do you think this web article is suitable for academic research? Why or why not?
    • How well will this web article work for your particular research topic?

    Part#2

You will analyze two primary sources related to your research topic. You will first search for two primary sources from an appropriate database. Once you have selected your two primary sources, you will analyze them according to the criteria in the worksheets below and write a 250-word analysis for each primary source.

How to Analyze a Primary Source

Primary sources are the pieces of evidence that historians use to create a narrative about the past. However, they must be understood in context to your time and place. For each source, think about these questions:

    • Who is the author/creator? Do they have any biases?
    • What is the content? Was it created with a specific audience in mind?
    • Are there any unique qualities or characteristics that makes this source stand out?
    • What does it answer about the time period?
    • What is the context? What is the significance at the time it was created? How does it connect to other sources you have found?
    • Has it been edited or translated? Has it been altered from the original?
    • What do you learn about the time period from using this source? Does your understanding of the source fit with other scholars interpretations, or does it challenge your argument?
    • What are some strengths and weaknesses of this source for helping us understand history?
    • How is this source relevant to your particular research topic?

Once you have found two primary sources relevant to your research topic, cite each source using Chicago manual style and write an analysis for each that sums up these questions above, as well as the information from the worksheet. Your analysis should be about 250 words for each source.

Two Sources for EACH PART #1 and #2

  • Conflict and restorative practices

Conflict is a normal part of lifewhether its with friends, family, classmates, or coworkers. One of the most meaningful ways to understand conflict is by thinking about a time you experienced it yourself. Now, imagine how restorative practiceslike open conversations, listening circles, and so oncould have helped. Could things have gone differently if everyone involved had a chance to speak honestly and be heard? Also, think about how being vulnerable, keeping an open mind, and seeing things from the other persons perspective might have changed the outcome. These qualities are often key to a real resolutionnot just settling a disagreement, but growing from it. Everyones experience is different. Theres no perfect example. The goal is just to think, be real, and discuss what you took away from it. Maybe it was a disagreement with a sibling, a falling out with a friend, or a misunderstanding in class or at work. Create one initial post and respond to at least two classmates. For your initial post, address the following: Think of a conflict youve seenwhether in a TV show, movie, or something from your own life, if you feel comfortable sharing. What was the conflict about, and how was it dealt withor left unresolved? What emotions did you notice from everyone involved? Looking back, how do you think the situation could have been handled differently, especially with cultural awareness or empathy? Describe how restorative practices could be used in this situation to help manage or resolve the conflict. How might being vulnerable, keeping an open mind, and considering others perspectives help in resolving the conflict?
