Learning Task 6-2: Direct Costs of Health Care in Ontario – Respiratory Diseases

In this task you will look at the direct costs of health care in Ontario. You will be repeating this task for other categories of diseases and will need to refer to it again later in the course.

1.Go to the Economic Burden of Illness in Canada (EBIC) website:

2. Find the table of Direct Costs and then scroll down to diseases of the respiratory system.

3.Examine only the DIRECT costs (drug, physician care, or hospital care) for all respiratory disorders. Record these costs in a way that makes sense for you.

There is more data lower down in the database that will help you to answer the following questions.

Now, look at the data you have in the table. On the Direct Costs of Respiratory Disease document you have created, answer the following questions:

  1. Which hospital expenditures for respiratory disorders are the greatest cost?
  2. Which sex accounts for the largest portion of various direct costs for respiratory disease?
  3. How do various direct costs change for different age groups?
  4. Based on this data, what two recommendations would you have for a way to reduce the direct costs of health care? Explain your recommendations.
  5. Think of 3 questions you could ask about the direct costs of respiratory disease/infection in Canada. Use the EBIC website to find answers to your questions. Then, record your questions and your answers on your Direct Costs of Respiratory Disease document.
  6. Then, IN SHORT, SUMMARIZE:
  7. -the Direct Cost you looked at
  8. – the table of data
  9. – the questions you came up with
  10. – the answers you found
  11. Find another posting that was for a Direct Cost (drug, physician care, or hospital care) that was different than one that you looked at. Write one thing you noticed that was different about your costs and one thing that was the same.
