Discussion 8 – CPNP 4000

Ethical and legal principles are essential foundations of professional nursing practice. Nurses must frequently make complex decisions that involve ethical considerations, patient rights, and legal responsibilities. Ethical theories and decision-making models help guide nurses when addressing challenging clinical situations, including issues related to social justice and end-of-life care. At the same time, nurses must practice within legal and professional standards, including scope of practice, licensure requirements, and accountability for patient safety. Understanding these ethical and legal frameworks supports professional decision-making and promotes safe, ethical patient care.

For this discussion, reflect on the role of ethics and law in professional nursing practice and address the following questions:

  1. Discuss one ethical theory (such as utilitarianism, deontology, or virtue ethics) and explain how it can guide ethical decision-making in nursing practice.
  2. Describe how ethical decision-making models can assist nurses when faced with complex clinical dilemmas.
  3. Discuss the concept of social justice in healthcare and explain how nurses can advocate for equitable patient care.
  4. Explain the importance of the scope of practice and professional standards in guiding safe nursing care and preventing malpractice.
  5. Describe the concept of professional accountability in nursing and explain how nurses demonstrate accountability in clinical practice, including situations involving end-of-life care.
