The Social Dilemma, directed and produced by Jeff Orlowski, exposes the dangers of social media. Former employees of major tech companies explain how these platforms are designed to capture users attention and manipulate their behavior. The film shows how social media affects mental health and uses algorithms and notifications to influence users. It also presents solutions to help reduce these harmful effects.

Body Paragraph One Social media platforms manipulate users through algorithms and notifications to keep users engaged and make money.

Evidence from film Roger McNamee, a Facebook early investor and venture capitalist, states that tech companies dont sell products anymore, they sell users (00:12:49). The film shows how social media keeps users engaged so they can make money.

Next evidence from – Jaron Lanier, a computer scientist and author, explains, Its the gradual, slight, imperceptible change in your own behavior and perception that is the product (00:14:20). The film shows how social media platforms can control the way you act and think even without you knowing.

Sandy Parakilas, a former Facebook operations manager and Uber product manager, explains how social media companies use growth tactics to get people to spend more time on their apps. Growth tactics are what companies use to get more

To use their apps.

Next evidence from – The film shows a teenage boy in class receiving a notification that captures his attention and keeps him on the phone. This shows how fast social media platforms can grab users attention to keep users engaged on their app.

Social media manipulation leads to negative effects.

Body Paragraph Two Social media harms users mental health.

Evidence from film – Jonathan Haidt, a social psychologist, explains, We see a dramatic increase in depression and anxiety among teenagers (00:40:00). This is concerning because it shows the negative impact social media can have on teenagers mental health.

Next evidence from film – The film shows a scene of a young girl taking a selfie with a filter and posting it. She feels happy at first, but after reading a negative comment, she runs to the bathroom and cries in front of the mirror. The film illustrates how social media can affect the way people see themselves because they fear how others perceive them.

This can lead to insecurity, affect mental health, and lead to suicide, which is why it is important to take action.

Body Paragraph Three The film suggests ways for users to stay safe on social media.

Evidence from film – Tristan Harris, a former Google design ethicist and co-founder of the Center for Humane Technology, suggests, We can demand that these products be designed more humanely (01:28:03). We have the power to force social media platforms to be safer because we are the reason they are making money.

Next evidence from film – Jaron Lanier argues, the only way to win is to get out of the system (01:24:40). Users need to stop using it if they dont make their platforms safer for users.

Companies should make their platforms safer, but users should also be careful with how they use them.

Conclusion

I knew how harmful social media was because of my grandmother warning me, but I still used it because it was entertaining. I knew that social media can affect users mentally, but The Social Dilemma revealed to me that social media manipulates users through algorithms and notifications. It also offers solutions to users, which I agree with, because the companies should make their platforms safe, but we also should be careful about how we use it. We need to change our habits since the companies wont change theirs, or else we will continue to be controlled by them.
