Step 1: In-Class AI + Peer Workshop (Preparation Stage)
Purpose: Use AI as a research tool and practice critiquing its output before writing your paper.
Workshop Activities
- Choose a Country
Select one country from the list: Argentina, Brazil, China, Chile, Colombia, Egypt, Ghana, India, Haiti, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Lebanon, Malaysia, Mexico, Nepal, Peru, South Africa, Thailand, Venezuela, Turkey. - Use AI to Research
- Ask AI to find recent news articles on your countrys GDP, inflation, unemployment, and one current economic crisis.
- Have AI summarize the key findings.
- Save the article links and AI outputs.
- Critique the AI Output
- Did AI accurately reflect the article?
- What details were missing, biased, or inaccurate?
- How would you improve the response?
- Peer Exchange
- Share one article each with a classmate.
- Compare AI summaries with your peers reading.
- Discuss: Where did AI help? Where did it fail? What insights came from your peer?
- Workshop Notes
- Record what you learned from AI, what you learned from your peer, and how this affects your analysis.
- These notes will later become your Workshop Reflection section in your paper.
Step 2: Paper Assignment (Submission After Workshop)
Paper Requirements
- Length: 34 pages (not including references).
- Format: Typed, double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman, 1 margins, APA (or university-required format).
- Sources: At least four reputable news articles (e.g., Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, New York Times, Economist).
Content Guidelines
GDP Analysis
- What did you learn from the article?
- What is the GDP growth rate?
- What does this rate mean to you?
- How many years to double GDP at this rate?
- Is the growth sufficient for catching up to developed countries? Why or why not?
Inflation Analysis
- What did you learn from the article?
- What is the inflation rate?
- What does this rate mean to you?
- Compare to U.S. inflation rate.
- If high, what are the costs of inflation? Give an example.
Unemployment Analysis
- What did you learn from the article?
- What is the unemployment rate?
- What does this rate mean to you?
Economic Crisis and Policies
- What caused the crisis? Consequences?
- Which macro variables declined/increased?
- Which curve shifted (AD or AS)? In which direction?
- Which policy tools were used? Were they effective? Why or why not?
Required Reflection Section (1 page at the end of paper)
Include your Workshop Reflection:
- How did AI help your research?
- What limitations did you find in AI?
- What insights did you gain from your peer?
- How did the workshop change your approach to writing this paper?
Deliverables
Paper Submission (34 pages) including:
- Analysis (GDP, inflation, unemployment, crisis/policies).
- Reference page.
- Workshop Reflection section at the end.
