English Question

Choose one of the following questions/topics and write a focused essay (about one-and-a-
half to two pages) that interacts closely with your poem(s). Use (brief) quotes as usual,
introducing each with a signal phrase. When quoting 2-3 lines of poetry, use a slash / to
indicate line breaks. Avoid long quotes by inserting your interpretation. For
parenthetical citations from poems in our anthologies, provide the page number (1, 2,
etc.). E.g., Donne famously writes, One short sleep past, we wake eternally, / And death
shall be no more (14). For poems on the D2L supplements, just provide the authors
name in parentheses (Heaney) (Blake), etc. Use assigned readings only; no use of AI.

1. How does poetry deal with human mortality (the inevitability of death)? Does poetry
provide some consolation for our mortality? Cite appropriately from 1 or 2 poems and
thoroughly explain your answer.

2. Discuss one of the World War I-era poems that invert a popular Biblical story and
transform the traditional story into something new. Quote amply from the poem and be
able to talk about how it departs from the traditional Biblical passage.

3. Analyze the poem of your choice giving special attention to the historical context in

which it was written. For example, how do World War I poems relate to the violence and
turbulence of the era (early 20th century)? Or, how do the Victorian Era poems
(approximately 1830s to 1900) address issues of faith and reason, industrialization, etc.?
Speaking generically about the age is understandable, but be sure to delve into the
specific details of the poem.

4. What does poetry have to say about love? Take one or at the very most two poems,
and describe the insight the poem(s) gives about the nature of love. (Come to think of it,
do NOT use Marlowe and Raleigh for this option.)

5. Why is poetry so confusing? Cite amply from the most confusing poem you ran
across from the anthologies or electronic supplements and explain why that particular
poem was so confusing or unclear to you.

6. Analyze a poem that shapes your understanding of God in a different way. How does
the poems treatment of God differ from a commonly held perspective? Does this poem
say shocking or puzzling things about God? Explain this new or different way of
thinking about God.
