Ethnic Studies Question

Directions:

Write a critical, reflective, narrative-based essay (think of a journal or diary entry) that explores your experience in this class over the past 10 weeks. You are being asked to use specific examples from class lectures, weekly materials, and your own life. Consider addressing the questions found below. You’re not being asked to answer every question, so please dont submit a list of responses to these questions. Instead, use these questions to guide your critical reflection journey.

  • Moments of Shock or Surprise:
    • What ideas, histories, or perspectives challenged you?
    • Did anything disrupt what you thought you knew?
  • Moments of Affirmation:
    • Did you encounter anything that resonated with your lived experience?
    • Did the course validate or give language to things you already felt or understood?
  • Exposure to New Knowledge:
    • How does it feel to be learning this material now?
    • What are your thoughts on not having been exposed to this knowledge earlier (if applicable)?
  • Paradigm Shifts:
    • Have your perspectives changed? If so, how?

    • How has this course impacted you, not just academically, but personally?

Requirements:

Length & Tone

  • Should be a minimum of 1000 words. You can write beyond this amount
  • Should be written in 1st person perspective

Engagement with Course Materials (3 different weeks of the course)

  • References at least 3 concepts from the lectures, please (cite the title of the lecture and the timestamp where the concept is discussed).
  • At least 2 in-class weekly materials. (cite with author’s/producer’s name & page # or timestamp)
    • You may quote small parts, paraphrase, or describe ideas
    • Explain how these ideas shaped your thinking

Thesis or Central Insight

  • Even though this is reflective, your essay should still have a central claim (a thesis), example: Over the past 10 weeks, this course has fundamentally reshaped how I understand ___ by revealing ___ and challenging ___.

Critical Reflection (Not Just Description):

  • Why did something impact you?
  • How did it challenge dominant narratives or prior beliefs?
  • What does this reveal about larger systems (race, power, identity, etc.)?
