Health & Medical Question

Purpose:

To critically appraise both qualitative and quantitative research designs, evaluating their methodological rigor, ethical integrity, and relevance to nursing practice. This assignment strengthens your ability to interpret, critique, and apply research findings in evidence-based care.

Instructions:

Assignment Components

Part I: Qualitative Research Appraisal

  1. Foundational Understanding
  • Define qualitative research.
  • Describe its characteristics and identify nursing phenomena suited to qualitative inquiry.
  • Compare and contrast three qualitative methodologies (e.g., phenomenology, grounded theory, ethnography).
  • Discuss strengths and limitations of qualitative evidence in nursing.
  • Explain how qualitative designs are used in nursing research.
  1. Study Critique Select one peer-reviewed qualitative research article and address the following:
  • Purpose & Design
  • Identify the studys purpose.
  • Describe and evaluate the appropriateness of the research design.
  • Ethical Considerations
  • Identify ethical issues and how they were addressed.
  • Sampling & Recruitment
  • Describe the sampling method and recruitment strategy.
  • Assess their appropriateness for the studys aims.
  • Data Collection
  • Identify data collection methods and evaluate their suitability.
  • Data Analysis
  • Describe the analysis process and assess its alignment with the studys goals.
  • Rigor
  • Identify four criteria for judging rigor (e.g., credibility, transferability, dependability, confirmability).
  • Evaluate the study using these criteria.
  • Findings & Limitations
  • Summarize key findings and limitations.
  • Discuss trustworthiness and applicability to nursing practice.

Part II: Quantitative Research Appraisal

  1. Foundational Understanding
  • Define quantitative research.
  • Describe its characteristics and identify nursing phenomena suited to quantitative inquiry.
  • Differentiate between observational vs. interventional designs and experimental vs. quasi-experimental designs.
  • Explain inferential vs. descriptive statistics and their relationship to levels of measurement.
  • Describe how quantitative designs are used in nursing research.
  1. Study Critique Select one peer-reviewed quantitative research article and address the following:
  • Purpose & Design
  • Identify the studys purpose and design.
  • Explain blinding and randomization and how they were applied.
  • Ethical Considerations
  • Identify ethical issues and how they were addressed.
  • Sampling
  • Describe the sampling method and recruitment strategy.
  • Explain how sample size was determined (include terms like power analysis, effect size, confidence level).
  • Data Collection
  • Outline data collection methods and instruments.
  • Define and discuss validity and reliability of instruments.
  • Data Analysis
  • Describe the analysis process.
  • Identify statistical tests used and relate them to levels of measurement (nominal, ordinal, interval, ratio).
  • Findings & Limitations
  • Summarize key findings and limitations.
  • Discuss trustworthiness and applicability.
  • Define statistical significance and name the tests used.

Submission Instructions:

  • The paper is to be clear and concise and students will lose points for improper grammar, punctuation and misspelling.
  • The paper should be formatted per current APA and 5-6 pages in length, excluding the title, abstract and references page.
