Your essay should demonstrate that you have researched the topic well and have fully considered cultural and/or historical implications as related Hannah’s tale. Potential Topic Options (in connection to the Great Depression): Family Ties The New Deal (+Farms) Working Class Education Women’s work “Okies” Farming Dust Bowl/Famine Communism Unions Abandonment (of land, of families, etc.) Political Policies Government Assistance (“Welfare”) Migrants (to California + other areas) The American Dream California Work Camps / Labor Camps Racism (Against Italians, Against Hispanics) African Americans/Blacks and the Great Depression Hoovervilles This is not an exhaustive list of possible topics. If you have a topic you are interested in exploring, please feel free to run it by me as I would rather have you research something you are interested in than choosing a topic at random. Guidelines: Choose ONE specific element to serve as the focal point of your essay (See example topics above). The more specific you can be, the better. ABSOLUTELY NO AI !!! Sources: For this essay, you are required to have no less than five academic (peer-reviewed) sources to support your argument. You are required to use Google Scholar, or books/articles from the library for these sources. Pay attention to article dates (more recent is usually better)! Audience awareness The audience for this essay is a general academic audience. Since this audience may not be familiar with Hannah’s text or with the details of the Great Depression, audience awareness is very important in this essay. Avoid Plot Summary your essay may contain a short summary of the Hannah’s story in your introduction or first body paragraph, but otherwise the paper should go well beyond just rehashing what happens in the story. Citations you will need to include BOTH in-text citations and a works cited page for this essay. If you are discussing works by different authors, your in-text citations will include the authors last name and page number: (Carter 27). If there are no page numbers, just include the authors last name: (Carter). If you are comparing works by the same author, you will want to choose a keyword from the tale title for your in-text citations instead: (Sleeping 23) Rubric: 200 pts total 80 pts — Focus/Development 40 pts — Organization 30 pts — Audience Awareness 30 pts — Research integration 20 pts — Grammar/mechanics/formatting/other localized issues
