Every cell in your body carries the same DNA, but different genes are turned on or off depending on the cells role. This process is called gene expression. Brain cells activate genes for communication and memory, heart cells activate genes for rhythmic contractions, and skin cells activate genes for protection and repair. Chemical signals and environmental factors guide these changes, allowing identical DNA to produce completely different cell types and functions throughout the body.
