Humanities Question

Your paper must include a personal reaction and analysis of your experience.
Why did you choose this experience? How do you see its importance in the overall dialogue of
the Italian Experience in the United States? Your readings, guest lecturer presentations and
class lectures should serve as the starting point. It is my expectation that your work will be
supported by connecting what you experienced to what you have learned in this course.

I attended the Calandra Institute 2026 Annual Conference on April 24, 2026, from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. The conference focused on Womens Spiritual Awakenings.

Upon entering, I met my professor, Donna Chirico, who introduced me to Anthony Julina Tamburrie, the Dean of the John D. Calandra Italian American Institute. Afterward, we were invited to have coffee and pastries before the program began.

Several scholars were present and gave presentations. I attended one session, which discussed womens spiritual awakenings. Parts of the presentation were delivered in Italian, so I did not understand everything. However, I was still able to learn some key ideas from the discussion.

You may attend any event hosted by the Institute; all are free and open to the public.
The website lists lectures, readings by book authors, and films. When you go to the
Institute, you will need to ask someone there to sign off that you attended. Event
announcements will be provided throughout the semester. This years annual
conference at the Institute is: Religions, Beliefs, and the Supernatural in Italy and across
Italian Mobilities. This conference will be in person, and I will be present.

Religious practices, policies, tensions, and conflicts have been a defining feature of the
construction of the modern Italian state and its struggle to assert a national identity
while in the shadow of the Catholic Church. Various religious communities, such as
Jews and Waldensians, and most recently Muslims and Buddhists, have had to contend
with the dominance of Catholicism in Italys political and cultural spheres. Italys colonial
and imperial projects in Africa and in the Mediterranean racialized religious differences
as aspects of warfare and violent subjugation. Religious beliefs and practices have also
shaped the ways in which Italian migrants were seen and understood in new environs,
especially in Protestant-dominant countries like the United States.

The conference takes place on April 24 and April 25. If you choose to attend the conference,
you need to attend a full session. (These are roughly 1 hour and 45 minutes.) Once the
conference program is available, it will be distributed.
