Instructions:
Choose one of the following questions to inform your response:
- How does structural inequality shape medical approaches to pain? Discuss, drawing upon the core concepts discussed in the unit, and with a close focus on one of the unit blocks (ie bearing witness, gender and pain, reproductive health, chronic pain, controlling pain, etc).
- How does narrative remodel or transform the experience of illness? Discuss, with reference to examples from creative arts or literary studies (e.g. to a comic, story, song, etc).
- The role of the doctor (or another health professional) is to legitimate a patients experience. Discuss, drawing upon examples from the research literature.
- Why and how do the arts and humanities enhance the study of health? Discuss, with reference to examples.
- Drawing upon one example or case study, examine how peoples experiences of health and wellness have been shaped by and/or entangled with historical global problems, such as slavery, colonialism, globalization, pandemics, etc.
- Choose one new(ish) technology and discuss this from the interdisciplinary perspective of health humanities. You should draw extensively upon the research literature in preparing your response.
- You can also develop your own essay question, but please speak to Anna about this.
You can draw on the set readings but also must identify and use two additional scholarly sources. Any author-date referencing system is accepted; you just need to use it consistently.
