Nurse managers/leaders, risk management, and the prevention of malpractice

The assignment is worth 200 points or 20% of the course grade. This assignment will allow you to explore the role of nurse leaders and managers in risk management. This role is essential to patient safety and avoiding malpractice and other litigation. Review the grading rubric below for the required elements of the assignment. Submit the work by 11:59 PM MT Sunday of week 2.

This assignment focuses on the following learning objectives:

    • Managing legal issues in the healthcare system

Instructions

1. Read the case study Nursing Malpractice in a Mental Health Facility.
2. Reflect on the case study:
   a. Briefly identify the actions or inactions that led to the patient’s eventual death.
   b. From Table 5.3, Components of Professional Negligence in the textbook (Huston, 2023) discuss which elements of malpractice are present.
3. Read the following article (available on the Library webpage): Cho, S. M., & Choi, J. (2018). Patient safety culture associated with patient safety competencies among registered nurses. Journal of Nursing Scholarship, 50(5), 549557.
4. Discuss the articles conclusion (Cho & Choi, 2018) and the nurse leaders role in creating a unit-specific patient safety culture.
5. As a nurse leader for the staff in the case study, discuss one action you would implement for each competency area, Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes, to help prevent malpractice.
6. Describe how the results of your implementations could be measured. How could you determine that your actions would make a difference in patient outcomes? Be specific and detailed.
7. Describe how you, as a future nurse leader, will approach the culture of patient safety and risk management. Give an example that illustrates your conclusion.
8. The file must be submitted as a Word document.
