Title: Presentation and Written: Creating change and development in the workplace
Details of task:
The aim of this assessment task is to demonstrate your skills in presenting to nurses and midwives, and your insights into the relevance of change and development strategies to the workplace. Accompanying this aim, is an essay in which you demonstrate the academic reading and work that informed your presentation.
Background work:
A leadership and management skill is to be able to present information and ideas to team members and other leaders. It is important that presentations convey the correct information in a way that the audience and can understand and appreciate. Additionally, being able to share insights from post-graduate study in this subject with colleagues is an important aspect of leadership and management work.
Scenario
Your manager invites a small group of staff to participate in a discussion and a brainstorm about how some change and development of the unit, in which you work, could be achieved over the next 18 months. Your manager knows that you have been studying leadership and management at university and she asks you to identify principles of change that could be used to develop your workplace. Some examples of principles of change include empowering teams, communication, evaluating effectiveness of change.
Assessment task:
This assessment consists of two parts: a Power Point presentation and an Academic paper
Part 1: Staff development PowerPoint presentation and presentation plan (Equivalent to 2200 words)
Based on the provided scenario prepare a staff development PowerPoint for presentation on the topic for a senior nursing/midwifery groups brainstorm. Create a 15-minute PowerPoint in preparation for staff presentations in which you will identify and outline three principles of change.
Please note that the presentation does not actually need to be given or recorded. This assessment requires you to discuss principles of change, it is not about areas of professional practice that your unit could develop in the future. There are numerous principles of change identified in your course materials, textbooks and in other sources. Please identify and select three only. The presentation will:
- Identify and outline three principles of change that could be applied in change and development activities that could be undertaken in your unit at a future date.
- For each of the principles of change, state what the principle is and how it works. Discuss with reference to literature how and why the principle can be important to a change process.
- Identify an example application of each principle which could be undertaken within your work context in nursing/midwifery.
- Highlight potential benefits and risks associated with change.
- Add your references at the end of the presentation.
- The presentation should be developed using PowerPoint software, with no more than 10 PowerPoint slides.
A short written outline of the plan for the presentation (500-1000 words) should be submitted in conjunction with the PowerPoint. The plan should include some details about timing of the presentation and slides, some explanation of the audience and your workplace context.
Part 2 Accompanying academic essay (2200 words)
Write an essay in which you discuss the principles of change that you used for your presentation. Your discussion should explain the principles of change and the theory of them or the theoretical ideas behind the principles that you selected. Discuss with reference to literature how and why the principle can be important to a change process. Your essay should discuss the potential benefits and risks associated with change. In addition, please explain and justify an example application of each principles which could be undertaken in your work context in nursing/midwifery.
