Research Paper Instructions
Students are required to write a research paper on an issue related to immigration law or policy.
The paper must be between 4-6 pages double-spaced. The assignment is worth 10% of the
course grade. The paper should be double-spaced, in Times New Roman font, with 1-inch
margins all around. The Research Paper will be due on Friday, May 1 (Week 15) by 3:00
p.m. uploaded on Canvas under the Assignments page under Research Paper as a Word or
PDF document.
The assignment has two parts. The paper should explain an immigration law issue or topic. You
should describe the immigration law or policy in detail, explaining how it will modify existing
immigration laws. You should also analyze the immigration law or policy. Your analysis can
take many different forms: Do you agree or disagree with the immigration law or policy, and
why? How will this immigration issue affect the United States? Will a proposed immigration
policy make a positive or negative change to the United States? Use arguments, data, and
evidence provided in the articles and cases that you read to support your analysis.
There are many immigration law topics and issues to choose from. Here are some examples:
1. Sanctuary city and state policies
2. ICE enforcement actions in Minnesota and other states
3. The Supreme Court case on birthright citizenship
4. States attempts to pass laws restricting federal immigration enforcement
5. Proposals to limit H1-B visas
6. DACA
You must also cite all sources using the Chicago Manual of Style:
In the text of the article, use parenthetical citations.
Ex: In 2005, Congress passed the Real ID Act (Smith 2005, A7).
Then, you will have a Works Cited page at the end of the paper that references the parenthetical
citation by the authors last name:
Works Cited Page
Smith, Dan. Congress Passes Real ID Act. New York Times, September 17, 2005.

and-bibliography
-Uses citation format for Bibliography on the website for citations in your Works Cited Page.
Note: You need to cite the article, not just provide a link to the article. Also, a link to the article
is not a substitute for the citation. You must have a citation to get full credit
