Prep Assignment #3.2: Comparing Police Response Times

The city of Metropolis wants to evaluate the performance of its police stations. Quick and consistent response times to emergency calls are critical for public safety. Over the past year, data were collected weekly from five major police stations. At first glance, their average response times appear nearly identical, around 6 minutes. However, city officials want to dig deeper: which station is more consistent in its response?

Guidelines

Instructions

Open the Dataset

Review the file provided: it contains weekly response times (in minutes) for Stations A, B, C, D, and E.

Calculate Measures of Central Tendency

  • For each station, calculate the mean and standard deviation of the response times.
  • Compare the standard deviations to determine which station is the most consistent and which one is the least consistent.
  • Remember:
    • A low standard deviation means the response times are clustered closely around the mean (high consistency).
    • A high standard deviation means the response times are more spread out (low consistency).

Visualize the Data

  • Create a histogram for each stations response times.
  • Compare the shapes of the distributions:
    • Which look tightly grouped?
    • Which are widely spread?
    • Do any look skewed or have unusual patterns?

Write a Short Report (12 paragraphs)

  • Summarize your findings and answer all questions.
  • Which station would you say is performing best in terms of consistency?
  • Why might consistency be as important as (or even more important than) the average response time?

Think like a city official making decisions. If two stations have the same average, would you rather rely on one that is predictably steady or one that sometimes arrives very fast but other times very slow?
