By completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and scoring guide criteria:

  • Competency 1: Apply key concepts and themes in the key domains of physical, cognitive, and sociocultural development.
    • Explain whether a child one knows sleeps as recommended by experts, and how family rules affect their sleep habits and growth.
    • Describe childhood temperament and how it shaped one’s personality.
    • Explain how childhood games helped creativity, problem-solving, or making friendships with other children.
    • Explain family’s food choices and habits and how they affected one’s childhood growth and health.
    • Reflect on childhood toys and activities, how they shaped understanding of gender, and the influence of family and culture.
    • Reflect on a time one learned outside school, how it differed from classroom learning, and the skills or knowledge gained.
    • Reflect on intelligence tests or school assessments, personal feelings during and after, and whether the results accurately reflected one’s intelligence. Explain reasoning.
    • Recall a childhood challenge, how one coped, and the support received from family, school, or community. Explain how the support helped or added difficulty.
    • Explain how nutrition and sleep influence physical and brain development during the teenage years. Describe the consequences of inadequate sleep or poor eating habits, and analyze how these factors impact growth and academic performance.
    • Explain how brain development affected a decision made as a teenager.
    • Explain how developing a positive ethnic and sexual identity in adolescence boosts well-being. Discuss how this protects from discrimination and supports a healthy transition to adulthood.
  • Competency 2: Use scientific reasoning and information literacy skills.
    • Explain how family income and living conditions impact early language development, including books, toys, and caregiver interaction. Suggest ways communities can support all children.
    • Explain how family taught one to express emotions and balance closeness and independence. Relate this to attachment style and current relationships.
    • Describe a childhood moral dilemma and decision-making process, reflecting on how personal sense of right and wrong has evolved. Connect the experience to Kohlbergs moral reasoning.
  • Competency 4: Describe the relationship between lifespan development knowledge and a meaningful professional direction.
    • Explains what from the text can immediately apply to work, school, or personal life.
  • Competency 5: Communicate professionally with proper mechanics and effective organization.
    • Write clearly and effectively with a few minor areas for improvement in conciseness or organization. Ideas are mostly logically organized. Allow few grammar, spelling, or punctuation errors, and these do not detract from overall understanding.
    • Use APA style citations, with fewer than three errors.
    • You really dont need AI software in this class, but if you are going to use it, there are some important things to keep in mind:
      • The correct way to complete the assessments is to read each textbox prompt, reflect on your experiences, use the assigned textbook for class and paraphrase relevant material to help you understand your experience, then cite the textbox. That approach will earn you distinguished ratings on each criterion!
      • Only use the assigned textbook for your assessments! The in-text citation and reference is included in each assignment template. If you include a different textbook citation and/or reference, that is a red flag that unethical AI use occurred.
      • You really don’t need to use an AI tool for this class. However, if you use an artificial intelligence (AI) tool (e.g., ChatGPT) when preparing any assignment, you must include a statement that describes that use and cite the AI used. Other important notes:
      • The majority of assignment content must be your own writing!
      • Content generated by the AI tool must be cited.
      • You must verify the accuracy of any content generated by the AI tool, and you are responsible for the accuracy of the content. AI software creates fake references, so you must verify the accuracy of all sources!
