As noted in the Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies endorsed by the American Counseling Association
Governing Council (https://www.counseling.org/docs/default-source/competencies/multicultural-and-social-justice-counseling-competencies.pdf?sfvrsn=20), counselor self-awareness is fundamental to cultural competency. In preparation for this assignment, review the counselor self-awareness competencies related to privileged and marginalized counselor attitudes and beliefs, knowledge, skills, and action.
Reflect upon your worldview, and identify at least two groups with whom you think you might experience discomfort based upon characteristics such as race, ethnicity, cultural, religion/spirituality, sexual orientation, gender identity, regional identity, and/or clinical diagnosis.
Prepare a 1,400-1,750 word paper in which you address the following Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies for each of the groups you identified:
- Attitudes and Beliefs
- Acknowledge your assumptions, worldviews, values, beliefs, and biases as members of privileged and marginalized groups.
- Acknowledge your privileged and marginalized status in society.
- Acknowledge the manner in which your privileged and marginalized status influences your worldview.
- Acknowledge the manner in which you privileged and marginalized status provides advantages and disadvantages in society.
- Knowledge
- Develop knowledge of resources to become aware of your assumptions, worldviews, values, beliefs, biases, and privileged and marginalized status.
- Develop knowledge about the history and events that shape your privileged and marginalized status.
- Develop knowledge of theories that explain how your privileged and marginalized status influences your experiences and worldview.
- Develop knowledge of how your privileged and marginalized status leads to advantages and disadvantages in society.
- Skills
- Apply reflective and critical thinking skills to gain insight into your assumptions, worldviews, values, beliefs, biases, and privileged and marginalized status.
- Demonstrate how your reflection and research increased your self-awareness of your own social identities, social group statuses, power, privilege, oppression, strengths, limitations, assumptions, attitudes, values, beliefs, and biases and the influence of same upon your potential work with the two groups that you identified.
You will not be evaluated on the content of your paper. Rather, you will be evaluated based upon the depth and breadth of your self-reflection, your research, your writing skills, and your critical thinking.
