Critical Analysis Research Paper: Students will write a two-stage paper to assess their ability to use social-psychological theories to discuss their understanding of social norms and develop relevant research questions on the topic. The rough draft of the paper will be peer-reviewed by the instructor AND a classmate (stage one). Students will have the opportunity to review results and strengthen their mastery in that area through by incorporating constructive criticism from their instructor(s) and/or classmates that review their work. The final draft must clearly state how the author addressed the peer-reviewed comments and incorporated them into their final draft or explain why any comments were not incorporated (stage two). The final grade for the assignment will be a cumulative score based on: (1) the rough draft of ones own paper; (2) the final draft of ones own paper; and (3) the review provided to a peer of their paper.
Stage – 1 Rough Draft (2-3 pages)
First, describe a socially acceptable, and legal, behavior in which you recently engaged this academic semester. Be sure to provide the reader with context clearly explaining what the behavior was, the other social actors involved, why you conducted the activity, where it occurred, and other details to paint a clear picture for the reader.
Second, reflect on what you have learned in the SYP 3000 course and use that knowledge to analyze the socially acceptable behavior you described using the perspectives of two different social-psychological theories covered in the course (e.g., nature vs. nurture, structuration, inattentional blindness, rational choice, George Meads self-development, symbolic interactionism, sociological imagination, etc.).
With both theories in mind, discuss how a social psychologist might separately use both theories to explain your socially acceptable behavior. This means you need to clearly explain each theory and any relevant concepts as well as how each theory can be applied to justify/rationalize your socially acceptable behavior. The theories and other information must come from empirical resources that must be properly cited in the body of the paper and listed in a reference section at the end of the document according to the American Sociological Associations formatting style for citations and references.
Stage 2 Final Draft (4-5 pages)
You will be tasked with improving and extending your rough draft before submitting a well- written final draft. Upon receiving feedback from the instructor(s) and classmate on the submitted rough draft, you will need to reflect on their rough draft as well as their reviews, to improve the work that was originally submitted in a manner consistent with the suggestions provided by the reviews. You will extend the work presented in their rough draft by offering an analysis discussing the strengths and weaknesses of each theory as it applies to understanding the socially acceptable behavior originally described in the rough draft. You will also need to include at least two outside empirical, peer-reviewed research articles IN ADDITION TO course theories/concepts. This revision process will also offer the opportunity to enhance written communication skills and build on critical and analytical thinking and problem solving skills.
