PSY 41: Life-Span Psychology Writing Assignment #1

Everyone wants the absolute best for their children, yet there are often differing opinions on what

actually is the best. This is why we have politicians arguing over how public educaon should be

run, hundreds if not thousands of how to books on raising children, and of course, our own personal

preferences and family tradions.

In lecture and in your textbook, many scienfic studies have been mentioned and referenced that

deal with improving, or maximizing the developmental potential of children. For this assignment, we

will be looking at empirical, scientific evidence for methods that help children (Conception through

the end of adolescence) to develop.

Your task: Identify and describe three (3) things lecture and/or your textbook have described that

can be done to help children develop in a posive way. Item (1) must be something that parents can

do to help their children develop successfully (e.g., parenting styles, nutrion, discipline, etc.), Item

(2) must be something schools can do to help children develop successfully (e.g., teaching style,

nutrion, physical education, etc.), and Item (3) is up to you to choose (a second thing parents can do,

or a second thing that schools can do, etc.). However, each item must be supported with at least one

scientific (research based) citaon (your textbook will be your easiest opion for citations/references).

– You may choose any me period from conception (chapter 2) through the end of adolescence

(chapter 10). Each item can be from a different age range.

– Your three items do not have to be on the same topic (in fact, it will be much easier to choose

three different topics to discuss)

– You may use your textbook as a reference, although you are also free to find outside resources

supporting your view if you like.

o NOTE: Outside resources must be a scienfic source. (email me if you are unsure)

– DO NOT simply copy and past anything from a website, your textbook, or any other material

you are referencing. This is plagiarism. You MUST put the informaon into your own words. If

you plagiarize, you will receive an automac zero (0) for this assignment.

Formang:

– Approximately 2 5 pages in length (these are guidelines, not hard limits)

– Although this is not an essay (no need for an introducon or conclusion) it is sell a writng

assignment, so please use complete sentences and paragraphs where appropriate.

– Your paper must be typed & double-spaced

– No cover page needed (do not include one)

– You may use whatever font & font size you like, as long as it is readable

– NO QUOTES allowed, instead paraphrase the informaon in your own words.

– Make sure to use citaons for your information. Make sure to cite within the text as you make

your statements, and include a reference section at the end of your paper

OVERVIEW:

We have learned about a lot of things that people can (and arguably should) do for their children, as well as things that they should not do. For your first writing assignment I am asking you to identify and discuss three things that can be done to help children (conception through the end of adolescence) develop in a beneficial way. You will choose 3 items that we covered from chapter 2 through 10 (items do not have to be from the same chapters or on the same topics).

Please read the prompt for more specific details as well as the sample essay for an example of what I am expecting of you. If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to reach out and ask! If you start early, I am also happy to review drafts of your paper and give you some basic feedback that can help improve your overall score. NOTE (MAKE SURE TO READ):

1) This is not a traditional essay. Make sure to follow the format indicated in the prompt/sample/video. There are 10 points for organization/grammar, you will automatically lose all 10 if you do not follow the proper format.

2) Each item requires at least one scientific citation. Your textbook is likely the easiest and best option for you on this assignment. You can use other sources, but be absolutely sure that they are scientific. Random blogs and webpages online do not count. If you are unsure if your source is scientific or not you can always email me and ask for confirmation.

3) No quotes are allowed. You must paraphrase everything into your own words. Be very mindful of plagiarism, as it will result in an automatic zero on the assignment. If this occurs, you cannot redo the assignment or make it up, so be very careful.

4) I want to repeat: no quotes are allowed. Everything should be re-written using your own words.

5) You are responsible for making sure the file you upload is exactly the way that you want it to be. Do not wait until 11:58 p.m. on the day it is due to try to upload (I recommend no later than 11:55 p.m. just to be sure). After you upload your file, check it to make sure it uploaded properly, because whatever you upload is what is going to be graded.
