Assignment: Real-World Business Ethics Case Study

Overview:
For this assignment, you will select a real-world business ethics problem and analyze it using concepts and theories from class. The paper should be no more than 3 pages (double-spaced) and should demonstrate your ability to explain, evaluate, and propose solutions to ethical challenges in business.

Instructions:

  1. Choose a Case
    • Find a real-life business ethics problem. This could involve workplace rights, corporate governance, environmental responsibility, marketing, AI, globalization, or another topic from our syllabus.
    • Provide a working link to a credible news article, report, or other reliable source that describes the case.
  2. Explain the Problem
    • Summarize the situation clearly in your own words. Who is involved? What happened?
    • Identify the ethical dilemma and why it is morally significant.
  3. Methodology
    • Briefly explain how you researched your case and how you approached the analysis.
    • Mention which ethical theory (utilitarianism, deontology, virtue ethics, etc.) or framework you used to guide your evaluation.
  4. Propose a Solution
    • Offer one or more possible solutions to the ethical problem.
    • Support your answer with reasoning: Why is this solution the most ethical? Who benefits or is harmed? Is it practical to implement?

Format:

  • Length: Maximum of 3 pages, double-spaced (excluding citations).
  • Include the link to your source at the end of the paper.
  • Use clear, organized writing and reference ethical theories where appropriate.

Case Selection & Explanation (30 pts) 2730: Case is clearly identified, highly relevant, and thoroughly explained with key actors and ethical dilemma described. 2326: Case is clear and relevant but explanation lacks some depth or detail. 1922: Case is identified but vague or incomplete explanation. 018: Case missing, unclear, or irrelevant to business ethics.
Ethical Analysis (30 pts) 2730: Strong application of ethical theories (utilitarianism, deontology, virtue ethics, etc.); deep understanding and well-reasoned analysis. 2326: Good application of theory but somewhat general or uneven. 1922: Limited or superficial use of ethical theory; weak connections. 018: No meaningful analysis or incorrect use of ethical concepts.
Proposed Solution (30 pts) 2730: Thoughtful, well-reasoned, practical solution(s) clearly tied to ethical analysis. 2326: Reasonable solution(s) but not fully developed or justified. 1922: Vague or unrealistic solution weakly connected to analysis. 018: No solution offered or irrelevant solution.
Methodology & Presentation (10 pts) 910: Methodology clearly explained; writing well-organized, clear, free of major errors; source link included. 78: Methodology present but minimal detail; writing mostly clear with minor issues. 56: Weak or unclear methodology; disorganized writing; missing/incomplete source. 04: Methodology absent; writing unclear; no source link.
