Research in Industrial Safety

In this unit, we learned about constructing control strategies for reducing common chemical and physical hazards. Your assignment for this unit is a four-part scholarly activity that analyzes factors of probability, chemical substances, ergonomic stress, and musculoskeletal disorder risk factors. Read each scenario below, and answer the prompt associated with it.

  • There have been several forklift accidents around the Congo warehouse over the years. The safety manager has claimed that we can expect to experience a forklift accident inside the warehouse once every 1,800 times a forklift is operated. Outside the warehouse, they have recorded an accident once every 4,900 times a forklift is operated. If a forklift driver operates a forklift 125 times outside the warehouse and 50 times inside the warehouse, in which area is it more dangerous for the forklift operator to operate the forklift based on probability?
  • Using information from your Required Unit Resources and any outside sources, produce a table or a short sentence describing the following compounds: acetone, benzene, styrene, tetrachloroethylene, toluene, mercury, methylene chloride, and chromium VI. Discuss if each compound is a carcinogen, mutagen, or teratogen, and identify what general category the chemical substance would fall into (e.g., asphyxiant, metal, corrosive).
  • You have been called to ACME Pill Pusher Pharmaceuticals to evaluate ergonomic stress on the workers applying child-proof tops to the medicine bottles. The supervisor explains that the management team is open to all recommendations that you may make. Identify the five common inputs that will be needed for an analysis of this job, and provide a recommendation on how to control each specific job attribute.
  • No one understands how demanding a job is within the manufacturing or distribution system more than those performing that work for 40 or more hours per week. Provide a detailed analysis of the positives and negatives of using employee ergonomic surveys in the workplace. These employee surveys would focus on musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) risk factors that we would want to discover to prevent an MSD before it happens.

Combine all four parts into one document. Your completed scholarly activity assignment should be at least two pages in length. There should be a minimum of three sources used to support the material, one of which can be your course textbook.
