Reflection on Business Consulting Course (MGMT 431) (chat writing)

This course completely changed the way I understand consulting and how businesses solve real-world problems. At the beginning of the semester, I thought consulting was mostly about giving advice, but through the hands-on project and client interaction, I realized it is much more complex. The course was designed to simulate real consulting work by combining strategy, communication, and problem-solving into a real client project . Through this experience, I developed a deeper understanding of consulting while also learning more about myself and the skills I want to continue building.

One of the most important things I learned in this course is that consulting is not just about having good ideasit is about understanding the clients needs and delivering solutions in a clear and structured way. Throughout the project, we had to go through stages like discovery, analysis, and presenting recommendations, which reflects the real consulting process . Working with GFL as our client showed me how important it is to ask the right questions before jumping to solutions. It also taught me that strong recommendations must be backed by research, data, and a clear strategy. Another key takeaway was the importance of communication and client relationships. Consulting is not just about solving problems independentlyit requires constant interaction, feedback, and collaboration with the client. I learned how to present ideas in a professional and confident way, especially during our final presentation.

Another major thing I learned was about industries and companies I had little exposure to before. For example, I learned a lot about the hotel industry and how it operates from a strategic perspective, including expansion and customer experience. I also learned about GFL as a company, including its services and product offerings, which I had never heard of before. This showed me how consulting requires you to quickly learn new industries and adapt your thinking. It pushed me to step outside of my comfort zone and think more strategically rather than just focusing on what I already know.

I can clearly see how I will apply what I learned in this course to my future career, especially in marketing and business roles. In my current and future roles, I will use consulting skills like problem-solving, data analysis, and strategic thinking to make better business decisions. For example, in marketing, understanding the client or target audience is similar to understanding a consulting clientyou need to identify their needs before creating a solution. Additionally, the ability to present ideas confidently will be extremely valuable. Whether I am pitching a campaign, working with a team, or presenting to leadership, the skills I developed in this class will help me communicate more effectively and professionally. The experience of working on a real client project also gave me confidence that I can apply classroom knowledge in real-world situations.

This course also helped me learn more about myself. One thing I realized is that I am capable of being a strong leader, especially in group settings. Throughout the project, I contributed ideas and helped guide discussions, which showed me that I can take initiative and lead when needed. I also learned that I perform well under pressure, especially when preparing for presentations. At the same time, I realized that I still get nervous when presenting, which is something I want to improve. Another thing I learned about myself is that I enjoy working on real-world, hands-on projects more than purely theoretical assignments. Being able to work with an actual company made the experience more engaging and meaningful.

There are a few key skills and behaviors I want to continue developing after this course. First, I want to improve my confidence in presenting. While I improved a lot during this class, I still want to become more comfortable speaking in front of clients and larger audiences. To develop this, I plan to continue practicing presentations, participating in class discussions, and seeking opportunities to present in internships or jobs. Second, I want to strengthen my strategic thinking skills. Consulting requires looking at the bigger picture and developing long-term solutions, which is something I want to get better at. I can improve this by analyzing case studies, staying updated on business trends, and practicing breaking down complex problems into clear strategies. Lastly, I want to improve my industry knowledge and adaptability. Since consulting often involves working with unfamiliar industries, I want to become better at quickly learning and understanding new markets. I plan to do this by reading business news, researching different industries, and staying curious about how different companies operate.

Overall, this course was one of the most valuable experiences in my academic career. It helped me understand what consulting really involves, gave me practical experience working with a real client, and allowed me to develop important professional skills. The combination of teamwork, client interaction, and presentations made the course both challenging and rewarding. Most importantly, it prepared me for my future career by showing me how to apply my knowledge in real-world situations.
