For this extra credit assignment, you will write a short response paper to a podcast episode about voting rights and the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act currently under consideration in the US Senate.
You will first listen to the following podcast. Note: I encourage you to take notes on the podcast in order to craft your response. Making note of specific time points in the recording will help you reference back to the helpful portions.
You will then craft a response paper incorporating at least two of the following questions/topics.
- In your own words, what does the SAVE Act do? What do you think is the purpose of the SAVE Act? (Note: You may need to do some additional research to fully answer this question. If you do, please include the link to the source(s) that you used.)
- What does Jason Carter mean when he says that the SAVE Act is “fixing a problem that doesn’t exist”?
- Why do they argue that the SAVE Act erodes trust in government?
- What does the data discussed from the Heritage Foundation suggest about voter fraud? How does it compare to tax evasion?
- Do you agree with Jason Carter’s characterization of who the “winners” and “losers” are in terms of the SAVE Act? Who do you think would be most impacted by this bill if it were to pass?
