Writing Question

The Texas government confronts many divisive issues that deeply divide public opinion. State government policy responses to issues like abortion, education, border security issues, energy policy (electric grid, for example), voting, etc., can satisfy some segments of the population while angering others. This assignment asks you to explore a public policy issue of your choice and complete the following:

CONTENT REQUIREMENTS:
1. Choose an issue in Texas Politics, such as the ones listed above or another issue (with approval), and explain why you chose this topic in a couple of sentences. (10 points)
2. Use an AI tool to generate output that presents at least two sides regarding your issue, e.g., for/against more gun control or for/against abortion rights. Explain which AI you used, why you chose that AI, and then summarize the AIs output on both sides of your issue. (10 points)
3. Conduct your own research on the issue that extends, broadens, or deepens the AIs output. Point out how your analysis is different/better than what the AI produced. (20 points)
4. Explain which side of the debate you take on this issue and why. Make sure your explanation extends beyond what you did for item 3. (10 points).
5. Explain at least two ways you would engage or participate in the state political process to advocate for your position. (10 points)
6. Make at least two predictions regarding your issue. Will one side prevail, and how will this issue impact state elections (for Governor, State legislature, etc.)? What law might the Texas Legislature pass in the future, or what policy might the Texas Governor or state agencies implement? Explain why you make these two predictions. (10 points)
7. Cite at least three (3) scholarly references within the body of the paper using the Chicago Manual of Styles parenthetical citation style. A parenthetical citation must include the authors last name, year of publication or date accessed (if publication date is not available) and page number if available, such as: (Smith 2023, 421). One of the parenthetical citations MUST come from the class textbook. Include a properly formatted Works Cited Page. (30 points).

A paper with no Works Cited Page at the end will receive a grade of 0.

A paper with no parenthetical citations in its body will receive a grade of 0.

A significant penalty (30 points) will be given if sources listed in the works cited cannot be found in the paper itself (or if sources listed in the paper cannot be found in the Works Cited).

FORMAT REQUIREMENTS:
1. Typed, 2-3 pages (not counting Works Cited Page), 12-point font, double-spaced.
2. Your name, my name, POSC 2306, and the date.
3. A title is required, but a separate title page is not necessary.

5. A logically organized and sequenced body followed by a clearly stated conclusion.
6. Use of the Chicago Manual of Styles parenthetical citation format. Students must be very careful and pay attention to details when they examine and cite internet sources. A paper with no parenthetical source citations and/or no Works Cited Page at the end will receive a grade of 0; no second chances will be allowed.
7. Use of footnotes or endnotes is prohibited.
8. Using encyclopedias like Wikipedia, Ballotpedia, history.com, etc. is prohibited.
9. Use of word mixers like Spinbot is prohibited and will result in a grade of 0. Also, see the statements below regarding academic integrity, plagiarism, etc.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
1. Your paper must be submitted online in Canvas/E-Courses by October 28th at 10:00am. Papers must be turned in no later than the beginning of class (10:00am) and must be either Word or PDF format. Papers that cannot be opened will receive a 0.
2. Late submissions will not be accepted, so plan accordingly.
3. Papers placed in my office, in my mailbox, or emailed will not be accepted.

Papers are graded according to the following four criteria: 1) content; 2) organization; 3) quality of writing; and 4) quality of research sources and reference citation formats.
