Part One: Analysis of Wedding Magazines
For this part of the assignment labelled Q1, you will examine how wedding magazines portray marriage and wedding culture in America. Select two articles from the above highligted wedding magazines. For each article, provide the following information:
- A working link to the article
- The title of the article
- The name of the magazine
- The publication date
Use each articles title as a subheading in your submission. Under each subheading, respond to the following prompts:
- Q1-a: Discuss how the article either supports or challenges the norms and expectations surrounding marriage in American society. Indicate the articles page numbers.
- Q1-b: Reference specific concepts from the textbook, indicating page numbers, to support your analysis and draw connections between the articles content and sociological concepts.
Use appropriate terminology and critically assess how media representations of weddings reflect or resist dominant cultural narratives.
Part Two: Ideal Wedding
Begin by writing a personal reflection titled Ideal Wedding. In this section, labelled Q2, describe what your ideal wedding would look like. Consider how your vision may be influencedor notby the evolving norms surrounding weddings in the United States. Reflect (1) on how your educational background and (2) religious beliefs might shape your preferences and expectations. Your response should go beyond personal opinion by incorporating sociological terminology and demonstrating an understanding of broader cultural and societal trends. Be sure to critically analyze how individual choices are often shaped by social structures, institutions, and cultural shifts.
Submission Guidelines
- Your total submission should be a minimum of 600 words, whether single- or double-spaced.
- Aim for approximately a total of 400 words for Q, Q1a and Q1b and 200 words for Q2.
