2.10 whats the dream

2.10 What’s in a Dream? (Graded discussion) – Group 2

What’s in a dream?

This exercise is intended to be a fun way to explore various explanations of dreaming and share some of the interesting dreams that we have had. Although the information from is related to this discussion, it is okay to do this assignment before you complete the section. (Note that the due date is a bit early in the unit to give you time to read and respond to classmates).

Your textbook mostly discusses two theories about what’s in a dream: the idea that dreams represent unfulfilled wishes or desires, and the idea that dreams are a random synthesis of brain activity while you are asleep (activation-synthesis). There are actually other possibilities that researchers are exploring as well. The video below summarizes some of these possibilities. In this discussion board, we will do some informal analysis of our dreams, trying to match them with the various theories.

Instructions

  1. Watch a Video

  2. Respond to the prompt

Respond to the questions below by the posted due date. Make sure to respond to all four questions, writing at least 2-3 sentences per question.

    1. Describe a dream that you have had. It can either be a dream that you have had recently, or a dream that you have had in the past but has stuck with you because it is on some way memorable. If you don’t have a dream that you are comfortable sharing in a group discussion, ask a friend or family member to share a dream that they have had.
    2. Describe anything that you can remember about what was happening in your day or in your life that you think might be related to the dream. Or discuss why you think the dream really didn’t have anything to do with what was going on in your life.
    3. Pick the explanation of why we dream from the video that you think best fits your dream and summarize the theory in your own words.
    4. Explain why you think this explanation best fits your dream.
  3. Reply to two classmates

Reply to at least two of your classmates’ posts by Sunday, 4/26. You can either agree with their explanation and explaining why you agree, or suggesting a different explanation of their dream and explaining your reasoning (make sure that you are using the theories from the video). Since dreams can sometimes feel very personal, please remember to be respectful and polite in your responses.
