CLINICAL LOG #3 (102 HOURS)
Self-Evaluation
During my continued and last clinical hours in the ED, I provided are to patients with different conditions. One significant case was a 4-year-old girl patient I was taking care of, her mom brought her after she administer 5 ml of medication instead of 2 ml, and mom called us after calling poising center, the poison center advised us to keep watching her for 8 hours to make sure that she is okay. The girl during her 8 hours was just jumping and playing around all the time and did not show any single symptoms. This case helped me understanding the importance of taking care of pediatrics with careful monitoring and developing communication skills with kids.
In addition, I had the opportunity to be involved with nice doctors to observe and help for suture procedures, especially couple of patients came to the ED while still bleeding so I had to apply pressure for some time to stop the bleeding. Also, continued to perform clinical skills such as IV insertion and communicate effectively with healthcare team and patients and helped with discharge teachings.
I have not had the opportunity to do CPR on a patient, so I asked my preceptor to participate in the CPR training, which I did and I passed the training to meet my objective.
I met course objective #1 by actively collaborating with health care team during providing care and monitoring. I met course objective #2 by promoting safety through close monitoring and observation and appropriate interventions with this kid case. I met course objective #3 when I recognized how the ED environment impact patients care in fast setting with close monitoring and teamwork were important to ensure patient safety. I have met course objective #4 when communicating with nurses and providers regarding patients status, concerns and changes.
For my personal objective, I worked on personal objective #3 by improving my clinical decision making and prioritizing patient based on their needs. I also worked on personal objective #5 when I kept communicating with the healthcare team regarding patients. I did not have to opportunity to meet personal objective #4 during this period, however, I asked my preceptor to participate in CPR training to continue developing this skill which I did and passed score. Overall, this whole experience helped me becoming more confident to triage, talk and take care of patients. I will continue to improve these skills I have learnt from this great practicum experience and expand my knowledge on other skills I have not the opportunity to participate in
