  • Assessment

Learning to complete biopsychosocial assessments and genograms is essential for social workers during the assessment stage of the Planned Change Process, helping them gain a comprehensive understanding of the client’s life and the factors influencing their wellbeing. These tools allow social workers to assess biological, psychological, social, and spiritual dimensions while identifying family patterns and dynamics that impact clients. This assignment provides students the opportunity to practice and demonstrate their ability to use these tools effectively, which is critical for creating informed intervention plans. By mastering these skills, social workers enhance their ability to engage clients and address complex, interconnected challenges. For this assignment, you are a social worker tasked with completing a biopsychosocial assessment on a mock client. You may use the mock client from Topic 4 assignment if you would like. Review the Appendix A: An Outline for a Biopsychosocial Assessment and Intervention Plan located in the Topic Resources. Create a Word document using sections I-V headers for your biopsychosocial assessment. Written biopsychosocial assessments are narrative documents and not question and answer. Genogram: Using the same mock client from the Biopsychosocial assessment, create a detailed three-generation genogram. You may use free websites such as Genopro, Creately, or Venngage, or software like Word or PowerPoint. No purchases or software downloads are required. Include the following in your Genogram: Three Generations: Include the client, their parents’ generation, and their grandparents’ generation or their children. If relevant, you may add additional family members (e.g., extended family). Five Descriptive Details per Family Member: In addition to name and gender, each family member must include at least four additional pieces of information. These could include: Date of birth/age Occupation or education level Marital status or significant relationships Health conditions (physical or mental) Substance use or abuse history Significant life events (e.g., divorce, death, trauma) Cultural background or religious affiliations Family Dynamics: Use standardized genogram symbols to depict relationships (e.g., close, distant, conflicted, abusive, etc.). Show key family patterns such as divorces, separations, cohabitations, or remarriages. Legend/Key: Provide a legend that clearly explains all symbols and relationship lines used (e.g., solid line for close relationships, dashed line for distant relationships). Submission: You will submit two items to your GCU instructor the biopsychosocial and the genogram on the same mock client.

    Paper #1:

    Rhetorical Analysis of an Advertisement

(at least 4 double-spaced pages; see rubric below)

Introduction and Background: In Ch. 1 of Inventing Arguments, readers are introduced to argument and rhetoric, two terms that intersect each other and share a common goal: persuading an audience to see the wisdom of a position. Argument is the act of asserting, supporting, and defending that position; Rhetoricthe art of persuasionis used to make the argument persuasive. To help you understand how rhetoric is used in arguments to persuade an audience, were going to turn to advertising. In Ch. 1, rhetorics general application in advertising is briefly discussed:

One of the most obvious uses of rhetoric is in advertising…Americans are profoundly influenced by advertising rhetoricso much so that it has become an art form. Companies spend billions of dollars each year in a rhetorical race for our attention. They shape every sentence and carefully select every image so each ad will have the most dramatic effect on the audience. (Mauk and Metz 10)

The next several weeks of class will assist you to think rhetorically about not only writing, but also communication in our multi-media world today that utilizes rhetoric in a combination of modalities: textual (words appearing on a screen), visual (live, still, or motion images on a screen), and auditory (sound of spoken or sung words, nonverbal music or ambient sound, or noise). The Rhetorical Analysis Essay assignment is grounded in the belief that (1) we need to be aware of possible rhetorical strategies that are used by others to influence us, and that (2) we need to be able to utilize rhetorical strategies ourselves to influence others in academic, civic, social justice, or general, every day, practical situations.

Directions: For this assignment, you are to choose your own advertisementcommercial video or print/digital image. After that, you will write an argument analysis that explains the use of rhetoric in the ad. More specifically, your argument analysis involves interpreting the ad in terms of the ads rhetorical situation, sponsor and audience, the claim the sponsor makes to the audience, the support (evidence, examples, and appeals) that is provided, how the ad engages with opposition (counterarguing, conceding, and qualifying), along with the hidden layers (assumptions and underlying values) that are present. Your paper should do the following:

-Have an introduction paragraph that explains the rhetorical situation of the adwho the sponsor is, who the audience is, where and when the ad was published/presented, as well as the sponsors exigence (need or urgency) to present the ad, and the main claim being asserted to the audience.

-Have three or more body paragraphs that explain and analyze how different types of support and appeals persuade the audience, how the ad engages with opposition (or omits doing so for rhetorical purposes), and how assumptions and underlying values are present in the ad.

  • Discussion 3: Public Policy Regarding Race and Ethnicity, an…

Chapter 4 of the course textbook discusses HB2281 in Arizona (2010), which banned the teaching of ethnic studies and became the subject of many student-led protests. While eventually overturned, it remains an important case as public debates regarding the teaching of racial, ethnic, and gender studies continue. More recently, those debates have shifted to whether matters of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) should be part of public school (or university) curriculum.

Using the perspective offered by the case of HB2281, assess the contemporary debate over DEI curricula in schools. What is it that those arguing against DEI in education claim is the cause for concern? And what do those who advocate for the value of DEI in education have to say in response? Are there parallels that you can see between the HB2281 case and the current debate over DEI in schools?

(In order to answer this, it would be helpful to review the Chapter 4 discussion of HB2281 as well as find your own resources regarding that case and the contemporary discussion of DEI.)

    Length: minimum of 250 words
