  • project 1 Framing statement

My Improvements Made Throughout Project 1

According to CampusNews, current college freshmen spent a significant portion of their high school years dealing with COVID-related disruptions… students are now struggling to handle the rigorous academic demands of higher education. I initially felt unprepared, but Writing 110 has helped me grow and feel more academically confident.

Throughout Project 1, I have improved my questioning, comprehension, and annotating skills. Reading Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkensteins They Say/I Say, I learned new annotation strategies, such as highlighting main ideas, summarizing in the margins, and circling important words. and question texts (see figures 1-3). I found new ways to annotate and take notes that benefit me. For example, Figures 1-3 display my strategies for annotating. Before Writing 110, I highlighted randomly and had small notes in the margins. Now, practicing annotating for homework and in-class activities, I have found the most effective ways to approach the text. These refined skills have helped me comprehend texts, respond thoroughly in reflections, and apply these methods to other classes, strengthening my understanding of those topics.

In my argumentative paper, incorporating The Empathy Diaires by Sherry Turkle and If we dont have our voice, what do we have? by Liana Yadav, I made vast improvements in text integration and development of claims that have allowed me to strengthen my own opinions and communicate them clearly through summarizing and connecting back to my ideas. I used quotes from both papers for a counterargument and support my own opinion (see figure 4). In Figure 4, you can see that my use of quotes from Yadavs argument serves as a boost for my argument. I found quotes from both authors to craft my paper and personal voice. By quoting their words to back up my writing, it creates credibility and understanding for the reader. I have known how to quote and describe someone else’s writing, but in Writing 110, I have learned how to quote and summarize someones writing to make it unique to me. I can reflect on the reading and summarize its points to create my argument and strengthen credibility.

Over my reading and writing experience in school, I have always been nervous to read aloud, and have read at a slower pace than most. Going into writing 110, I was nervous about the workload, along with the pace of assignments. I wasnt sure how I was going to keep up. Knowing this struggle, I created a plan that consists of starting my reading homework as early as it gets assigned, giving me time to annotate, comprehend, and reflect. I also read the reflection questions ahead of time to understand what I am reading. This helps me grow as a reader because I can take my time and fully understand the content to apply to my writings and reflections. Not only have I seen improvement in my comprehension, but my pace has been getting quicker.. With this comes more effective writing and responses to the reading. I feel more confident in my skills, not only in writing 110, but in other courses as well.

Overall, writing 110 has made me feel more confident in my academic skills. I can take what I learn in class and apply it to all my other courses at UNE.

  • Pedigree Construction Assignment

Family History and Pedigree Construction Project

Assignment Purpose: Family history can reveal critical information necessary to ascertain correct diagnosis(es) and management plan development. Understanding how to garner accurate and pertinent information during patient and/or family interviews is essential in having useful information. Pedigrees (genograms) are schematic versions of family histories. They allow us to quickly scan generations, family members (immediate and remote) to determine symptoms, phenotypical, syndrome, disease, etc. presence or absence. This assignment allows students to review a mock family history and then create a pedigree reflecting the contained information.

    1. Review the attached Fabry Disease family history scenario.
    2. Pedigree Construction: Pedigree construction software is not required for this assignment. You may elect to utilize PowerPoint, pedigree/genogram software, or hand draw the pedigree. RFFlow has a free 30-day trial version of its software. This is not specifically genetic pedigree software; however, you can utilize the drawing features to create one.

If you elect to draw the pedigree, please ensure that it is neatly drawn with no cross through marks. Pedigrees submitted with illegible handwriting or cross-through marks will not be graded and will receive a zero. You are welcome to utilize legends to denote symptoms/disease processes within your pedigree(s).

Do not, however, add the symbols for males, females, and other standard symbols seen in pedigrees. Legends should be used for specific disease states, conditions, etc.

Construct a pedigree reflective of what is noted in the mock family history while also using a comprehensive symptoms-based approach.

This helps you understand the process. A comprehensive symptoms-based approach means that you include *all* family history, signs/symptoms, and other available information in your pedigree. Focused pedigrees focus only on signs/symptoms/family history associated with a specific disorder.

As you begin practice, you can use the more specific disease specific pedigree construction approach.

Do not assume that symptoms are not important.

Focused pedigrees will be given a zero.

Please make sure you appropriately identify the proband and/or consultand within the pedigree with the appropriate nomenclature.

Use the rubric attached to ensure 5 points will be given.

  • Writing Assignment 3 / Final Project

The final project, due March 1, allows you to integrate and demonstrate what you have learned in this course. Prepare a paper of more than 6 pages and no more than 9 pages in length, not including the title page and reference list. The paper should follow the posted guidelines and use accepted research approaches and APA citation format. Every aspect of your analysis should be anchored by communication principles and best practices.

Writing Assignment 3, the Final Project, asks you to analyze the case study Forensic Services at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health by Seijts and Iuliani (2021). The case describes a large mental health teaching hospital facing a high-profile media crisis that has significantly disrupted its relationships with major stakeholders.

Your task is to propose a strategy to navigate the publicity crisis effectively, with communication and stakeholder management at the center of your approach. The strategy should both protect the hospitals reputation and address the concerns of all parties involved. As you build your analysis, integrate insights from Ramannas Managing in the Age of Outrage (2022), Groysberg and Leamons Difficult Conversations and Dealing with Challenging Situations at Work (2015), Neeley and Ryders Lighting the Fire (2016), and Frei and Morrisss Storytelling That Drives Bold Change (2023). These readings should support your approach, showing how broader communication principles can be applied to this case.

Your paper should include an introduction, a clear articulation of the crisis, your proposed communication strategy, an explanation of stakeholder management approaches, and a conclusion that summarizes your key points. Cite all sources in APA format, following the guidelines provided in the syllabus and the examples posted in Moodle.
