Chapter 4 – Project Team Members

Initial Postings: Read and reflect on the assigned readings for the week. Then post what you thought was the most important concept(s), method(s), term(s), and/or any other thing that you felt was worthy of your understanding in each assigned textbook chapter.Your initial post should be based upon the assigned reading for the week, so the textbook should be a source listed in your reference section and cited within the body of the text. Other sources are not required but feel free to use them if they aid in your discussion.

Also, provide a graduate-level response to each of the following questions:

Jordan Mitchell, a newly certified project manager at a growing logistics tech company, has been assigned to lead a high-visibility supply chain optimization project with a tight timeline and cross-departmental collaboration. Known for their organization and attention to detail, Jordan excels in managing schedules, documenting processes, and ensuring tasks are completed on time. However, the role now demands greater stakeholder engagement, team motivation, and adaptive problem-solving in uncertain environmentsareas where Jordan feels less confident. Midway through the project, tensions rise among team members, some stakeholders are unresponsive, and project scope shifts are becoming frequent. Jordan realizes that relying solely on technical skills may no longer be enough and begins to reflect on personal strengths and areas for growth in leadership, communication, and strategic thinking.

Discussion Prompt: As a project manager in Jordans position, what do you identify as your top three strengths and your top three areas for improvement? How do these impact your ability to lead a project team through challenges like scope change, stakeholder resistance, or cross-functional tension?

[Your post must be substantive and demonstrate insight gained from the course material. Postings must be in the student’s own words – do not provide quotes!]

[Your initial post should be at least 450+ words and in APA format (including Times New Roman with font size 12 and double spaced). Post the actual body of your paper in the discussion thread then attach a Word version of the paper for APA review]

    Chapter 4 Project Team Members

    Overview:

The focus of this chapter is on project team stakeholders because project managers are likely to spend most of their time with this group. Also, the project team conducts most of the project work. Therefore, it is critical to keep project team members motivated, informed, and actively engaged with the project. Effective management of a project team begins with a proper kickoff. Project kickoff meetings must inform team members about the mission before the team. Team members are more effective if they understand higher-level project goals and deliverables and why they are important to the organization. Also, kickoff meetings should begin to build team relationships and commitment. Effective project managers are confident without being overconfident. Also, successful project managers use their awareness to determine when project team members are not achieving their full potential due to obstacles such as poor motivation, lack of proper direction, or being overburdened with too much work. In many cases, a personal conversation with the impacted project team members will uncover the path to resolution.

    Learning Objectives

    • Understand project team dynamics and the importance of this for a project manager
    • Discuss who is typically part of a project team
    • Discuss tips for managing a project team and team dynamics
    • Discuss the relationship between stakeholders and the extended project management team

    Inventory Skills Assessment

    Overview:

This portion of the course delves into project manager competency development. You will begin to identify ways to improve the personal competencies that support your success as a project manager regardless of the type, size or complexity of projects you work on. Once you understand your development opportunities, as well as your strengths, you will increase your capacity for personal growth with guidance for refining three key areas of project management competence including knowledge and skills, performance, and personal behavior and attitudes.

    Learning Objectives

    • Assess your project management competencies and overall skills
    • Understand your strengths and area of potential improvement as it pertains to project management
    • Describe how your project management skills could impact the potential success of a project

    Supplementary Readings:

    Requirements: 450 + words

  • English Question

    Overview:

    • Now that you’ve read David Wallace-Wells’s nonfiction journalistic analysis of scientific data to predict how climate change will impact humanity’s future and Octavia Butler’s fictional imagining of a climate-changed future set in modern-day Southern California, you can evaluate which elements from each book were most effective in:
      • informing and persuading readers about the current and predicted future impacts of climate change on humanity
      • arguing for particular approaches or solutions to climate change (both short-term and long-term) and
      • persuading readers that climate change is an urgent issue about which they should care.

Essay #2 Prompt: Using evidence (quotes) from each of the assigned textbooks, explain which genre (nonfiction, fiction, or some combination of both) is most effective in helping readers understand and care about climate change’s likely (predicted) impacts on humanity–both now and in the future.

    Sample Thesis Options:

    • A sample thesis could look (meaning, it can look different) something like:
      • Nonfiction writing like David Wallace-Wells’s The Uninhabitable Earth is the most effective genre for helping readers understand and care about climate change’s predicted impacts on humanity because it educates readers with scientific evidence that is so shocking and compelling that it makes readers care about how climate change will affect them in the future. OR
      • Fiction writing like Octavia Butler’s Parable of the Sower is the most effective genre for helping readers understand and care about climate change’s predicted impacts on humanity because it uses scientific evidence to create the dystopian setting. However, following characters as they live through a climate-changed world is what truly helps readers care about climate change’s impacts because reader’s empathize with the characters through the use of pathos. OR
      • The most effective way to help readers understand and care about climate change’s likely impacts on humanity is to combine detailed analysis of scientific data in non-fiction writing with fictional writing that features well-developed characters and the effective use of pathos. The combination of information and emotion is the best way to reach and persuade readers.
    • With this prompt, your essay should have a specific and direct thesis that makes a clear argument in favor of a particular genre (or combination of them). Your body paragraphs should support your thesis with direct quotes from the textbooks.
