  • Week 6 Experimental Design Plan

Look through the directions in the transpiration lab student guides. Before performing an experiment or lab, you must design and plan what is going to be tested and how you are going to test it. You must be organized and be able to communicate your results effectively. This assignment is designed to help you organize your experiment design. Use what you have learned about the scientific method from your lab assignments to help you design an experiment on plant transpiration. You will need to conduct some background research on plant transpiration to help you design your experiment. The research will be used to help you write the introduction portion of your experiment paper.

An experiment is a research method in which you manipulate a variable or variables under very controlled conditions and examines whether any changes occur in response to the manipulation of the variable.

It is a cause and effect relationship

    1. Experiment introduction & background research with references in APA format (50 pts)

Before you can design an experiment you need to have a good understanding of the current research. You need to summarize what research is currently known about your experiment question in the introduction of your report. This part of the assignment allows you to get a jump start on that task while building valuable knowledge that will help you in your experiment design.

    1) Visit the APUS library and internet to research information on plant transpiration. The program guide for natural sciences is a good starting place to begin your APUS library research:

    2) Look through these tips for how to share background research in an introduction:

Collect background information for your research experiment and use references and in text citations to back up you research. Explain any ideas or techniques that are necessary for someone to understand your experiment. At the minimum you should cover what transpiration is, what role/influence your independent variable has on transpiration, why this is important, your testable question and hypothesis. The introduction is generally 1 page long. You need to use APA formatted in text citations and references and this should be written in the 3rd person. You need to use at least 4 different academic references for your background research.

The grading in this section of the assignment is broken down as follows:

Coverage of topic including scientific question and hypothesis: 30 points

4 academic references and APA reference and citation technique: 15 points

    Grammar/spelling/voice:5 points

    2. Identify the Independent Variable, Dependent Variable and Constants (10pts)

    • Independent Variable is the variable that is manipulated. It is the variable that you change on purpose. (The CAUSE) There are many variables that can change transpiration. You will choose only 1 independent variable to test. You can choose from temperature, light, humidity, plant species, or air flow.
    • Dependent Variable is the variable that we measure in response to the manipulation of the independent variable. It is a measurable change. State what are we measuring to gauge transpiration in our experiment here(The EFFECT)
    • Constants are all the other variables in the experiment that must remain the same so we can see what effect the independent variable has on the dependent variable.
    • The Control is used as a standard of comparison. The control is a level of the independent variable that has been changed the least or not at all.

    3. Write a Title (5pts)

    • Use the following pattern when writing a title…

The Effect of the (Independent Variable) on the (Dependent Variable)

    4. Write a Testable Question (5pts)

    Not all questions are testable!!

    A testable question asks. . .

“What is the effect of the Independent Variable on the Dependent Variable?”

    5. Write a Hypothesis (5pts)

A hypothesis is a prediction of the outcome of the lab. Your prediction is based on your understanding of the scientific concept.

It answers your testable question. Use the following pattern:

IF the (IV- how it is changing), then the DV- how you think it will change), BECAUSE (why do you think this is happening.

Example- If the IV increases, then the DV will decrease because….

    6. Write your Procedures (20pts)

Procedures are a list of materials used in the experiment and the steps in performing the experimental part. Procedures are the recipe you follow in order to perform the experiment. Write these in order, in paragraph form, and using your own words. Do not simply copy and paste from the student lab guide.

    7. Create your Data Table (5pts)

Data is recorded during the procedures. You need to create your data collection table for your experiment. Below is an example Data collection table. Create your own collection table using labels with the names of your variables and the correct units you are measuring. Do not collect data yet! You are just setting up the table so you are ready to collect data when it is time to run your experiment. Wait until you get feedback from this assignment to begin any data collection

    • {Insert name of Independent Variable} (insert units)
    • {Insert name of Dependent Variable} (insert units)
    • Average { Insert name of Dependent Variable }(insert units)
    • Trial 1 *
    • Trial 2 *
    • Trial 3*
    • Control
    • {Insert Treatment 1 Name}
    • {Insert Treatment 2 Name}
    • {Insert Treatment 3 Name}

*Repeated Trials——Why repeat the experiment more than once?

Mistakes happen no matter how careful you are so if you repeat the experiment you will get more reliable data. The more repeated trials the more likely you will reduce the effect of chance errors and the more reliable your data becomes and the more confidence you can place in your data. Generally a minimum of 3 trials is acceptable for experiments with more being better.

Here are some helpful videos that walk you through the setup steps involved in conducting the experiment:

Read through the attached documents to understand how you will customize the experiment and make it your own.

  • Chapter 4 Single-Gene Inheritance

The Bios 2250 Short Research Papers

Each student is to develop a, short research paper, based on library and Internet research. For

the first paper, you are to pick a topic of interest to you from any chapter of your Ricki Lewis textbook as a subject for your research. I chose chapter 4 Single- Gene Inheritance

Once you selected your topic, you need to find an article about it through library or internet

search. Your research paper is then a critique and summary of your chosen article.

Be sure to use legitimate online resources to access academic papers. These may include

academic search engines, subject-specific databases, and open-access repositories. Many of these

resources are available through the university library, while others are free to use or are

recommended on the back of each chapter in the Lewis textbook (e.g., Google Scholar, Scopus,

    etc.).

The Outline for each of your two short research papers must contain the following:

    1. Title: The actual title of the chapter you have chosen to focus on

    2. Subtitle: The actual title of the research article or prose piece that you are going to critique

    and summarize.

    3. The Body of the Paper (no subtitles within paper)

You are to type (double space; size 12 New Times Roman font) a four (or more) page critique

and summary of the interesting article that you discovered during your many hours of searching

the Internet or library sources. The body should start with a brief introduction including why the

article was interesting to you. Rest of the body would be your analysis/ summary and critique

of the major points of the article or prose piece that you found so interesting. You are encouraged

to use first person present tense in your critique.

    4. Your concluding remarks including overall summary and take-home message as well as

    predictions and recommendations.

    5. Make sure you use your own words and writing style and avoid direct quotes from your

    chosen article.

    6. When you submit your paper, it will automatically be checked by Turnitin plagiarism-

detection software. You will see a similarity score and a report. A score of 10% or less is

acceptable (usually due to matches in the title or references). A score higher than 10% means

there is too much copied material, which will result in losing points on your grade.

    7. Supporting Materials: You must provide the Original Article (either as an attachment or an

active link). While you may use additional articles to support your paper, you must select and

clearly indicate one article as your main original article.

    8. Both the research paper and supporting material must be submitted through the “research

papers” module in canvas by the due date for each paper. Be sure to check that any links you

provide are active and working properly before your submission.

In short, I want your research paper and the article, itself, to read and grade. Needless to say, you

wont get your 50 points for your 2 short research papers if you dont follow all the guidelines

    listed above.

I will grade your papers based on the criteria described above, with points divided between

adherence to the guidelines and the quality of the content. After the first paper grades are in, I

will provide the class with a brief overall evaluation (highlighting common areas where points

were lost). This feedback will be available before the due date of the second paper, so you can

improve. No evaluation will be provided for the second paper.

An example: (This is only one of many possible examples.)

Lets say that you have always been interested in human origins and evolution. So one of your

short research papers would be entitled: Chapter 15 Human Origins and Evolution.

The subtitle of this research papers would be the title of the research article or prose piece that

    you found so interesting.

Then you are to mentally digest the content of the article that you wanted to write about. After

you understood the content of the article, you are to write your own four (or more) pages

summary and critique of what the article was all about.

If you pick another chapter, your research topics would be specific to that chapter.

    Another example:

Lets say that you have always been interested in matters of sex. The title for one of your two

short research papers would be: Chapter 6 Matters of Sex. Then after studying this chapter in the

Lewis text, youd search the WEB (and the suggested sources found on the External Links Page

of the Bios. 2250 Course website) to find interesting article related to the content of Chapter Six.

Your short research paper could focus, for example, on sexual development, the traits inherited

on the sex chromosomes, how the inactivation of one of the two X chromosomes in human

females equalizes the sexes, and/or how gender affects human phenotypes etc. Your short

research paper could be any logical development that is derived from the selected text chapter

    topic.

  • close analysis of scholarly article

For this essay, you will choose a scholarly writing from an academic journal (or, book, dissertation, etc.) and analyze the author’s thesis as well as their writing style. The writing should focus on mythical or magical beings in some capacity.

The following should be included in your essay: 1.) a summary of the author’s main points; 2.) who you believe to be their intended audience; 3.) what you believe to be their goal, if they achieved it, and an explanation of why/why not; and, 4.) your own point of view on the subject/research.

Overall, your argument (thesis) should hinge on how effectively the author persuades readers through their writing. So, you may wish to discuss their word choice, sentence fluency, organization, personal voice, tone, etc.

    Example thesis:

Through the use of engaging and accessible language; frequent appeals to logos; and well-organized structure, Laura Sells successfully argues in her article, ‘”Where Do the Mermaids Stand,”‘ that Disney’s The Little Mermaid relays a troubling message to young women: the scope of their future is ultimately very limited due to their gender.

    Thesis breakdown:

1.) Topic: Laura Sells’ article “Where Do the Mermaids Stand”?

2.) Your argument: Sells successfully argues that Disney’s The Little Mermaid sends a message to young women that the scope of their future is very limited due to their gender.

3.) The points/How you will support this argument:

    • In body paragraph 1, you will analyze her engaging and accessible language and explain how that effectively helped persuade you of her point (ie. that The Little Mermaid sends that troubling message to young women).
    • In body paragraph 2, you will analyze her appeals to logos, and how these moments effectively helped persuade you of her point.
    • In body paragraph 3, you will analyze her well-organized structure, and how this helped persuade you of her point.

*No more than TWO quotations permitted in this essay; only one block quote (four lines or more).*

750-900 words, MLA format. The use of any form of AI is prohibited for this assignment.

    20% of final grade.

  • HR memo – DEIJ related work-place equity issue (SEXUAL HARAS…

This assignment is an HR memo that has to be based on a DEIJ-related workplace equity issue. The specific issue for this assignment is SEXUAL HARASSMENT. I’ve uploaded a sample for you to draw from. This memo will be graded based on the following components:

    1. Draft the purpose and outline of your message (3.75 points). Memos from human resources can be informational, such as policy or procedural updates, or they can be written confirmation of employment actions, such as documentation for disciplinary review or termination. As you draft the outline, determine your reader’s position or title, background, and qualifications

    2. Gather the data necessary to substantiate your topic (3.75 points). For example, if you’re writing about a policy change, get copies of current handbooks and standard operating procedures. Also, obtain revised policy statements that have been disseminated after your handbook was published. If the policies have to do with processes, such as technology, obtain step-by-step instructions for using the new technology.

    3. Identify the employees you are targeting in this HR memo (3.75 points). List the department or the ranks/titles of these employees. Determine who your readers are and adjust the language accordingly. For example, if you’re writing to IT specialists about procedural matters, they will understand technology-speak. However, if you’re writing a memo about IT processes and your audience consists of more than IT staff, prepare it so it’s understandable for a broad audience.

    4. Indicate whether HR memos are confidential (3.75 points). HR correspondence can contain sensitive information about wages and terms and conditions about employment matters, such as benefits, discipline, HR metrics, and HR strategic plans.

PLEASE REACH OUT IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR REQUIRE ADDITIONAL CLARIFICATION.
