  • Unit 4 Essay AHS

This two-page essay measures your mastery of ULOs 2.4, 3.6, and 3.8.

In this units lesson, we explored constitutional law, civil liberties, and ethical decision-making in homeland security. These issues become especially acute during large-scale disaster scenarios, where federal and local agencies are called upon to make time-sensitive decisions under conditions of uncertainty, chaos, and public vulnerability. These actions must occur within the legal framework of the U.S. Constitution and be guided by ethical principles that reflect a commitment to justice, rights, and equity.

In Unit II, we examined the structure and functions of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and its component agencies, such as FEMA, TSA, CBP, CISA, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Each of these agencies plays a specific role during emergency and disaster response, from deploying resources and managing public safety to ensuring border integrity and cybersecurity resilience. Understanding these institutional roles is critical for evaluating the legal and ethical dimensions of disaster response strategies.

    Scenario

Imagine a large-scale disaster, such as a major earthquake, terrorist attack, or cyberattack, has devastated a large metropolitan area. In the aftermath, the following occurs.

    • FEMA activates the National Response Framework and coordinates mass care operations.
    • DHS authorizes the deployment of surveillance drones through CISA and other partners to monitor population movements.
    • CBP and TSA extend security protocols to cover critical infrastructure like ports, highways, and airports.
    • Local police and federal agents, operating under emergency declarations, impose curfews and conduct home searches in heavily damaged areas without warrants, citing exigent circumstances.

    Instructions

Based on the above scenario, prepare a two-page essay that answers the following three questions:

    • Do the actions taken in this scenario (e.g., curfews, surveillance, warrantless searches) raise legal or ethical concerns? Support your response using the Fourth and Fourteenth Amendments and one ethical framework.
    • How do the roles and responsibilities of DHS and its component agencies shape the response effort? Identify at least two agencies and explain their jurisdictional functions.
    • As a homeland security leader, how would you balance protecting civil liberties with ensuring public safety during a disaster? Reflect on your personal values and priorities.

    Formatting Requirements

    • Submit as a Word document.
    • Adhere to APA Style when constructing this assignment, including in-text citations and references for all sources that are used. Please note that no abstract is needed.

Respond/comment/Discuss to colleague”s post as attached

During my practicum, I participated in a follow-up visit for a 24-year-old female who returned to review laboratory results obtained at a prior visit for persistent fatigue and dizziness. The laboratory findings confirmed iron deficiency anemia, which aligned with her history of heavy menstrual bleeding. Research shows that for reproductive-aged women, the symptom of heavy menstrual bleeding is highly prevalent and a major contributor to iron deficiency (Munro et al., 2023). Knowing this, I initially felt confident interpreting the results. However, the encounter challenged me to move beyond diagnosis and focus on patient education and shared decision-making.

This experience highlighted the importance of correlating laboratory data with a thorough history, particularly in identifying chronic blood loss as an underlying cause. Reviewing the results with the patient reinforced the need to communicate complex information in an understandable way while addressing her concerns about long-term management. Numeric laboratory results can be challenging to interpret, and it may cause anxiety and confusion for the patient, so I made sure to take my time so she could fully understand (Van Der Mee et al., 2024). I also recognized that failure to explore gynecologic contributors could result in delayed resolution of symptoms and recurrent anemia.

From this encounter, I learned that anemia management extends beyond prescribing iron supplementation and requires addressing the underlying etiology. Patient adherence is closely tied to understanding the diagnosis and treatment rationale (Patel et al., 2025). Moving forward, my action plan includes strengthening my counseling skills, routinely assessing menstrual history in reproductive-aged females, and ensuring appropriate referrals are made to address contributing factors. This approach will support improved outcomes and continuity of care.

  • Courts and community justice

Discuss Chapter 3 and associated materials with your classmates here. First, find and share an example of one of the approaches of the courts and community justice in Chapter 3. Briefly describe and evaluate your example and identify the type of community court that it involves. How does this example relate to your textbook’s treatment of courts and community justice? With those offered in the additional materials from this week–for example, how does it relate to the main concepts and ideas from the two TED Talks? The short film on Teen Court? Red Hook Community Center? Taken together, how do all of these sources inform your understanding of courts and community justice?
