    MGT-520: Managing Performance for Results

    Module 09: Critical Thinking

    Assignment Instructions

    Appraisal Tool

The effective evaluation of employee performance depends, to a certain degree, on the tool that is utilized. Based on that statement, in this Critical Thinking Assignment students will create a one-page Performance Management Form that can be used in an organization. To accomplish this task, complete the following:

    1. Choose any organization in Saudi Arabia that you are familiar with, either one you have been employed with or have studied/researched.
    2. Choose an assessment template that you find beneficial/advantageous (note: typing assessment or evaluation format into Google will bring hundreds of different templates for you to choose). Students can also use one utilized in their current/previous workplace, or one they are familiar with.
    3. Using that template as a guide, create your own assessment tool you would propose to evaluate any employee/position in that organization (for instance, you may choose to evaluate an employee in finance). Be clear about:
The assessment/evaluation criteria important in your review.
The rating categories (e.g., superior, meets expectations, etc.)
An appropriate mix/combination of check-box assessment criteria and short answers.
    4. Please post the assessment template you utilized as a guide along with your own completed assessment tool.

Your form should meet the following structural requirements:

  • 2 pages in length, maximum
  • No need for in-text citations.
  • The assessment tool must be your own work, though you may follow the template/outline of those found via Google.
  • You are strongly encouraged to submit all assignments to the Turnitin Originality Check prior to submitting them to your instructor for grading. If you are unsure how to submit an assignment to the Originality Check tool, review the Turnitin Originality Check Student Guide.

Be sure to support any statement made in your form, and cite any statement and/or words/phrases that you are utilizing from other sources.

  • Research & Summaries Question

Write a research paper on end-of-life considerations for an aging adult. USE CHAPTER 18 of The 3rd edition of Nutrition for the Older Adult by Melissa Bernstein and Nancy Munoz (ISBN 9781284149005), published by Jones & Bartlett. write as a sophomore in college, keep the tone neutral, don’t use unnecessary adjectives or adverbs, avoid technical jargon and complex terms

    Instructions:

Would be minimum 10-12 pages in Word (includes cover, abstract and reference page) all in APA format. The research paper will discuss all the aspects of end-of life. You are being graded on format, length, research quality, and content. Writing should be in full paragraphs with intext citations (name, 2025). You should have TONS of these in your paper. DO NOT USE AI

Do not list bullet points, you will receive a zero.

Appropriate sources for current research on this topic are peer-reviewed research articles (try searching in PubMed via the library The Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is an example of a peer-reviewed journal. Everything in your paper should have a citation or its considered plagiarism. Put your full reference list at the end of your paper and also insert your references in Packback’s work-cited tab.

If you dont know already, peer reviewed means that other health professionals have reviewed it and think the document is legit. Non-peer reviewed is someone just writing an opinion in an article or blog, and it is just that…their opinion. Do not use opinions unless it is solely yours. If citing from websites, they must be legit sources. WEB MD and other generic websites are not scientific, but layman information.

Your paper should be written the scientific community. Remember, someday you may have to address this topic with a loved one.

How do you know you are doing it correctly, answer these questions.

Did I cover appropriate topics and are they cited with proper references?

Were appropriate sources (peer-reviewed articles) utilized for research? Minimum of 5. Use the UH librarians can help you, thats their job.

Were all sources cited and included in APA formatted at the end of your paper and cited in the text properly?

Is your paper interesting, did you present new ideas or concerns or find any new references?

    Class Project

The objective of the class project is two fold: a) to familiarize you with the usage of Excel (which you will have to use in your jobs, no matter what type of jobs), and b) to draw conclusions based on the facts and your learning. You need to answer all the questions provided in a report format (i.e., do not re-write the questions and provide answers below) and write no more than 2-page, single spaced, 12 fonts, and Ariel/Times New Roman font. Your writing should be precise and indicative of your understanding the facts presented in the data. I will hold a review session on how to prepare your data and how to create the report, which will be announced within Canvas closer to the time in which the assignment is due. See the Weekly Schedule below for due dates and times.

    • Data: from FDIC website. Make sure your bank is a member of FDIC and has at least five years of data.
    • What to do: Analyze the bank’s operating performance, risk and strategies.
    • What to submit: You need to submit your written part in word or PDF format along with Excel calculation. Your written part should stand out itself, i.e., you should use numbers to support your arguments. If need be, you may reference to the specific cell in the Excel. If you would like to copy paste tables from Excel, you can add an appendix to the word file. Appendix is separate and is not included in the page count. A grading rubric for the project will be provided in the Assignment Dropbox area. Please note that NO late Projects will be permitted.

  • Business Question

A mentor once told me a saying: Ask for a job, and you will get advice. Ask for advice, and you will get a job. Perhaps its an oversimplification, but there is a lot of truth in it. In most professions and especially in financial advising, networking and asking good questions are two of the most important skills to learn. In this assignment, you will practice both.

For this assignment you will select 3 financial advisors to contact. Draft an email to each one and request to meet over coffee, lunch, video call, or phone call. As a requirement, this conversation cannot be had over email. During a later module, you will submit the notes from the conversation. You only need to schedule and successfully meet with 1 financial advisor, but you may meet with more than 1.

    Instructions

Submit a Word document with the following 3 sections.

Section 1: Create a bullet point list of 3-5 financial advisors you plan on contacting. Under each advisor, list the name of their business and a link to their website. Preferably list advisors with whom you do not currently have a close relationship (i.e. not family or close friends).

Section 2: Draft a 50-200 word email to send to the financial advisors. Introduce yourself and explain you are looking to enter the industry and would enjoy asking them a few questions about their work and retirement planning. Make sure your request is time-bounded (i.e. request 30-45 minutes).

Section 3: List 10 questions you may ask the financial advisor during the conversation. You will not be expected to ask every single one of these questions, but you will have them ready to ask.

Most of the questions should relate to retirement planning, but not every question needs to directly reference it. Examples include: What is your approach or process to helping clients prepare for retirement?, What causes retirees the most stress?, As an advisor what are the most rewarding and challenging aspects of retirement planning?, and What is your biggest success story in relation to retirement planning?. You may include these example questions in your list of 10 questions.

    Other Instructions:

Length of the assignment: At least 3 advisors are listed, the draft email is 50-200 words, and at least 10 questions are listed.

Format of the assignment: Current APA.

    Number of citations: None.

    Acceptable sources: N/A.

Helpful tip: When you are looking for financial advisors to contact, you may use personal networks. You may also utilize online directories such as NAPFA, XYPN, the CFP Board, and the Fee-Only Network. Each of these organizations include a directory of advisors. Please use advisors found in or around Phoenix, AZ

Note: Your assignment will be checked for originality via the Turnitin plagiarism tool.

  • Computer Science Question

R Programming Random Forest / Gradient Boosting

    Completion requirements

For this assignment you will write an R program to complete the tasks given below. You will hand in two files for this assignment.

    • A File with your R program. This file should contain only the code (no output) and must have the typical r extension. No other file extensions will be accepted. The reason is that the assignment be graded based on your R code and not the output file. The output file will be used to verify the code commands. Also, please make sure that all comments, discussion, and conclusions regarding results are also annotated as part of your code.
    • A PDF/DOC file with your output code. We are giving you more flexibility regarding how you want to present your output (tables, plots, etc.). You can either use RMD files that combine code, narrative txt, and plots or you can use word document with copy and paste from the R platform you are using. However, please remember that all output (tables, plots, comments, conclusions, etc.) shown in this file has to be generated by the same R code that you submit. This is important! Output shown that is generated using a separate code or output shown that is not supported by the submitted code will not be graded. Screenshots will not be accepted.
    • R Data Set: HMEQ_Scrubbed.csv (in the zip file attached).
    • The Data Dictionary in the zip file.

Note: The HMEQ_Scrubbed.csv file is a simple scrubbed file from the previous week homework. If you did more advanced scrubbing of data for last week, you may use your own data file instead. You might get better accuracy! If you decide to use your own version of HMEQ_Scrubbed.csv, please hand it in along with the other deliverables.

This assignment is an extension of the Week 4 assignment. The difference is that this assignment will now incorporate Random Forest and Gradient Boosting models.

Step 1: Read in the Data

    • Read the data into R
    • List the structure of the data (str)
    • Execute a summary of the data
    • Print the first six records

    Step 2: Classification Models

    • Using the code discussed in the lecture, split the data into training and testing data sets.
    • Create a Decision Tree model using the rpart library to predict the variable TARGET_BAD_FLAG
    • Create a Random Forest model using the randomForest library to predict the variable TARGET_BAD_FLAG
    • Create a Gradient Boosting model using the gbm library to predict the variable TARGET_BAD_FLAG
    • All model parameters such as tree depth are up to you.
    • Do not use TARGET_LOSS_AMT to predict TARGET_BAD_FLAG.
    • Plot the Decision Tree and list the important variables for the tree.
    • List the important variables for the Random Forest and include the variable importance plot.
    • List the important variables for the Gradient Boosting model and include the variable importance plot.
    • Using the testing data set, create a ROC curves for all models. They must all be on the same plot.
    • Display the Area Under the ROC curve (AUC) for all models.
    • Rerun with different training and testing data at least three times.
    • Determine which model performed best and why you believe this.
    • Write a brief summary of which model you would recommend using. Note that this is your opinion. There is no right answer. You might, for example, select a less accurate model because it is faster or easier to interpret.

    Step 3: Regression Decision Tree

    • Using the code discussed in the lecture, split the data into training and testing data sets.
    • Create a Decision Tree model using the rpart library to predict the variable TARGET_LOSS_AMT
    • Create a Random Forest model using the randomForest library to predict the variable TARGET_LOSS_AMT
    • Create a Gradient Boosting model using the gbm library to predict the variable TARGET_LOSS_AMT
    • All model parameters such as tree depth are up to you.
    • Do not use TARGET_BAD_FLAG to predict TARGET_LOSS_AMT.
    • Plot the Decision Tree and list the important variables for the tree.
    • List the important variables for the Random Forest and include the variable importance plot.
    • List the important variables for the Gradient Boosting model and include the variable importance plot.
    • Using the testing data set, calculate the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) for all models.
    • Rerun with different training and testing data at least three times.
    • Determine which model performed best and why you believe this.
    • Write a brief summary of which model you would recommend using. Note that this is your opinion. There is no right answer. You might, for example, select a less accurate model because it is faster or easier to interpret.

Step 4: Probability / Severity Model Decision Tree (Push Yourself!)

    • Using the code discussed in the lecture, split the data into training and testing data sets.
    • Use any model from Step 2 in order to predict the variable TARGET_BAD_FLAG
    • Develop three models: Decision Tree, Random Forest, and Gradient Boosting to predict the variable TARGET_LOSS_AMT using only records where TARGET_BAD_FLAG is 1.
    • Select one of the models to predict damage.
    • List the important variables for both models.
    • Using your models, predict the probability of default and the loss given default.
    • Multiply the two values together for each record.
    • Calculate the RMSE value for the Probability / Severity model.
    • Rerun at least three times to be assured that the model is optimal and not over fit or under fit.
    • Comment on how this model compares to using the model from Step 3. Which one would your recommend using?

    Essential Activities:

    1. Watch all the training videos
    2. Execute the example code while watching the training videos.
