1. Respiration Activity
You will be examining respiration of fish by measuring dissolved oxygen.
You either access the simulation by clicking the link below and opening it up in a new tab, or use the embedded simulation below:
Respiration / Photosynthesis Simulation
Set the fish number to 1 and the plant number to 0.
Leave the other variables at the default values (100% light intensity, 25 degrees, white light)
Run the simulation and record the starting and ending oxygen values in the table. Record the difference.
Then change the fish number to 2, run the simulation and record the starting and ending oxygen values in the table.
Repeat and move the number of fish to 3, 4 and 5 and record the starting and ending oxygen values in the table.
Your table should look like the following:
# of FishDO StartDO EndDifference
1
2
3
4
5
Post Respiration Activity Questions
Use your table to answer the following questions:
A. How did the number of fish impact the DO level? Why did that happen?
B. What would have happened to the DO levels if we added a plant into the tank? Why do you think that would have happened?
2. Photosynthesis/Respiration Activity
Using the same simulation above, complete the following:
Set the fish number to 1 and the plant number to 3.
1
2
3
4
5
Post Photosynthesis/Respiration Activity Questions
Use your table to answer the following questions:
A. How did the presence of the plants impact the DO levels compared to Activity 1?
B. How many fish can 3 plants sustain? How do you know?
3. Photosynthesis Activity
Using the same simulation above, complete the following:
Set the fish number to 0 and the plant number to 1.
Leave the other variables at the default values (100% light intensity, 25 degrees, white light)
Run the simulation and record the starting and ending oxygen values in the table. Record the difference.
Then change the plant number to 2, run the simulation and record the starting and ending oxygen values in the table.
Repeat and move the number of plants to 3, 4 and 5 and record the starting and ending oxygen values in the table.
Your table should look like the following:
# of PlantsDO StartDO EndDifference
1
2
3
4
5
Next you will be observing the impact that light color has on photosynthesis.
Set the plant number to 5 and the fish number to 0.
Set the light color to white.
Leave the other variables at the default values (100% light intensity, 25 degrees Celsius)
Run the simulation and record the starting and ending oxygen values in the table. Record the difference.
Then change the light color to Blue (465 nm), run the simulation and record the starting and ending oxygen values in the table.
Then change the light color to Green (530 nm), run the simulation and record the starting and ending oxygen values in the table.
Next change the light color to Orange (620 nm), run the simulation and record the starting and ending oxygen values in the table.
Your table should look like the following:
Light ColorDO StartDO EndDifference
White
Blue (465 nm)
Green (530 nm)
Orange (620 nm)
Post Photosynthesis Activity Questions
Use your tables to answer the following questions:
A. How did the number of plants impact the DO level?
B. How did the different light wavelengths impact the DO level?
C. Describe what happened when only Green light (530nm) was present. Why did that happen?
4. Submit your assignment
Your assignment should include 4 tables and all 7 questions answered.
You can attach each table of the assignment onto a single document, type up your responses and upload that document, or write out your tables and answers and submit a picture of your work.
