essay on Boswellia serrata
Overall Task: Briefly discuss an over-the-counter natural supplement (Boswellia serrata) aor alternative medicine that has been used without prescription and evaluate it critically.
You must focus on its use against a particular condition or symptom and critically evaluate the pros and cons of using that particular natural product.
Only restriction:
NOTE: In Canada, natural products must have an NPN (Natural Product Number) as opposed to a DIN (Drug Identification Number). If wondering whether your product is a drug or a natural supplement, check if it has an NPN or DIN. If it has an NPN, it is a valid choice for this assignment. If it has a DIN, it is not. For more on this please visit the following web page: https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/services/drugs-health-products/natural-non- prescription/applications-submissions/product-licensing/licensed-natural-health-products- database.html
In 1000 Words Maximum (not counting Title, Name, Annexes, Figures & Bibliography) discuss the 4 following points. You may discuss them in any order you see fit. The % next to each section represents the approximate % of space in your work this section should take. These are not requirements; they are meant as guides:
1) Potential Health Benefits/Claims (25%)
Describe one of the health claims/potential benefits regarding your choice of Natural Product
Could be against a condition/disease or a specific symptom/ailment
What evidence exists to support this claim?
Provide updated information of the medication in the literature or any source
commonly used by public to search and use the product.
Provide a brief explanation of the posited mechanism of action supporting the
potential health benefits of your product.
2) Product Pharmacology (20%)
Briefly describe what is known about its pharmacokinetic Ex.: Administration, Metabolism, Duration of action
What are its potential adverse effects/toxicity?
3) Critical Appraisal (30%)
Based on your research, comment on the risk-benefit ratio of your choice of product.
o Are its potential health claims proportional to the current scientific evidence? Or are they overreaching?
o Should it be more widely used, or should it be avoided?
o Does its risk-benefit ratio justify investing more research resources into it?

Rules/Format for Submission
1000 words Maximum Not counting Title, Name, In-Text Citations, Annexes & Bibliography
You have all the liberty to choose the type of medium you want to present your information (ex.: Power Point**, Word, Prezi, Zine, Pamphlet, others, etc.) but you must submit a single document on myCourses
o **Note #1: Please have the name of your product in the Title of your
submission
o **Note #2: No matter the medium of presentation you choose, please make sure to put all the relevant information you want us to consider during grading into the main visual area. For example, if using Power Point, we would only consider the information on the slides. If you put text into the comments section, it wont be considered since it is meant for the speaker and should be spoken to. So unless you had done a PPT voice over, it would not be considered during grading.
o Polish your English/French Point deductions if unclear or many
mistakes.
o Any tables or diagrams/figures must be placed either at the end in annex or embedded within the work where appropriate and referenced.
Mandatory Generative AI Acknowledgement Statement
o As per the course policy, use of generative AI tools is permitted for this
assignment on the condition that it is disclosed
Refer to policy in your course outline for more details.
Citations & Bibliography using either Vancouver or APA
o 3-5highqualitysourcesusuallygetthebestresults
o No plagiarism! Respect the work of others and tell us where you found
your info if applicable.
o For rare/awkward types of documents to reference, do not worry about the exact APA format for citation. If we see the author(s), the year, and a way to find the source (ex.: URL), it will be all good. The spirit of a citation is to recognize the work of others and to be able to track and verify the information ourselves if necessary.
Some Advice & Context:
1000 words is not very long but that is also the point. This is also meant to be an exercise in synthesis. Be succinct and straight to the point with the information conveyed. Make use of images or diagrams whenever relevant and possible to save on words. Imagine that you are educating a patient or a friend about this new potential treatment: images and diagrams are much more appealing than long texts!
Use appropriate scientific and pharmacological terms but keep it simple.

APA Citation basics For more information on how to site, please go to – n_text_citations_the_basics.html#:~:text=APA%20citation%20basics,the%20end%20of%20the %20paper When using in-text citations (APA), follow the author-date method of in-text citation. This means that the author’s last name and the year of publication for the source should appear in the text, for example, (Jones, 1998). Direct quotations If you are directly quoting from a work, you will need to include the author, year of publication, and page number for the reference (preceded by “p.”). Introduce the quotation with a signal phrase that includes the author’s last name followed by the date of publication in parentheses. Example: According to Jones (1998), “Students often had difficulty using APA style, especially when it was their first time” (p. 199). If the author is not named in a signal phrase, place the author’s last name, the year of publication, and the page number in parentheses after the quotation. Example: She stated, “Students often had difficulty using APA style” (Jones, 1998, p. 199), but she did not offer an explanation as to why. Summary or paraphrase If you are paraphrasing an idea from another work, you only have to make reference to the author and year of publication in your in-text reference, but APA guidelines encourage you to also provide the page number (although it is not required). Example: According to Jones (1998), APA style is a difficult citation format for first-time learners. Please note that any information that is not your own must be cited. Any information that is not cited would be considered plagiarism, resulting in an automatic failure on your project. -

Pharm Assignment
Nurses are often engaged in educating or informing clients/families/groups/communities about various over the counter and prescribed medications, including how they work, dosing, safety considerations and potential adverse effects and/or drug interactions. To do this effectively, nurses need to understand the difference between a generic and brand name drug, the mechanism of action of various medications in the body, key pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties of prescribed and over the counter (OTC) medications, lifespan considerations, as well as potential adverse effects and drug interactions. Students will be assigned to review a commonly used OTC medication to research. Students will research the following information:
a) The generic and brand name of the medication; including active ingredients, dosing information for children, adults and/or seniors (focus on one population) and cost of the medication.
b) Indications for the medication using plain language to describe how the medication works in the body
c) Key pharmacokinetic properties of the medication in terms of routes, dosing, absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination and how lifespan considerations (e.g., pediatrics, adult, gender, ethnicity, and seniors) influence these properties. Focus on one population- pediatrics, adult, or the older adult.
d) Key pharmacodynamic properties of the medication.
e) Three key adverse effects of the medication and two pharmaceutical and one non-pharmaceutical (complementary/natural product) potential drug interactions.
f) Two important teaching priorities regarding this medication for patients.
After you research the information, you will need to categorize the information into the key headings listed. These are bolded above.
Students will then develop an educational fact sheet for the general public written at a reading level no higher than grade 8. This assignment will require you to take large amounts of information and then prioritize and edit it down to what is essential to communicate (i.e., key points), using one page/side of a piece of paper in word text doc or brochure style. Students may choose to use template platforms such as Canva, Adobe Express, or Venngage. The fact sheet should be presented in such a way that non-clinical people would understand. There are links to two readability calculators posted to the Moodle page, and you can use this function in WORD as well. This informative page should be attractive with use of pictures yet easy to read.
References in APA format to be on the backside (second side of the paper), and you must use at least (1) current peer-reviewed reference. Websites such as WebMD, Healthline, DrugsRx, and the Mayo Clinic, for example, are not to be used as they are not credible sources for academic assignments.
Include the title of the fact sheet, your name, student ID, the date, and course number in the header and submit it to Moodle. Grading for this assignment is based on the comprehensiveness of the investigation, adhering to the description of the assignment, and writing at a grade 8 or less reading level. Points are deducted for late submissions. This assignment takes more time than you would think, so it is advised that you start well before the due date.
