  • REVISION

I will upload the files so that you revise – includes plag removal

You are required to complete a 10 to 12-page research paper that analyzes a major problem facing todays juvenile justice system. An introduction must summarize and define your topic, including a clear statement of the problem or issue at hand. You must also select a theoretical framework for your issue and describe its relevance to the issue that you write about.

    Integration of Other CJBS Courses:

I highly recommend drawing on material from other CJBS courses you have taken. For example, classes such as Police Use of Force, Youth, Crime and Justice, Police Work with Juveniles, Police and Diversity, Victimology, Urban Anthropology, and Women in Policing offer valuable theories, concepts, and perspectives. You are encouraged to integrate this knowledge into your paper by applying relevant theories and concepts and referencing them to strengthen your analysis and support your arguments.

The body of the paper must include summaries of current relevant research from a minimum of five (5) credible sources, including some of the assigned readings. The paper needs to be formatted in conformity with APA rules.

    Some examples might be:

-Disproportionate minority confinement, recidivism, gang issues, drug use, juvenile curfews, zero tolerance policy for/with school searches, socio-economic factors affecting delinquency and parental liability for juvenile offenses, and life without parole for juvenile offender

Cite all relevant concepts and sources discussed in the course.

    The paper must:

Include a title page, introduction, body, conclusion, page numbers, and bibliography

Include at least five (5) sociological/criminological sources (journal articles or books) besides the class readings.

Be typed in 12-point font, double-spaced, with 1-inch margins

Run 10-12 pages long, not includigjvng the cover page or bibliography

  • substantial response

    What is a substantial response?

It carries the discussion forward by adding the following:

    • Asking a question to your classmate to further explore the topic.
    • Adding a video with APA reference that further explores the topic or a related topic or showcases an alternative view.
    • Adding a quote or citation from another source or reference along with adding the APA reference at the end of your post.

    Overview

In your DSW program, you are moving toward the completion of a capstone project that focuses on action research or program evaluation. Although you are not starting that project now, it is helpful to think through action research requirements specific to identifying advocacy strategies for change (that is, policy development, policy advocacy, program implementation, lobbying, and so on).

In Week 2, you identified oppressive elements of a given social problem and broke down that social problem in a systems framework to propose a general solution. In this assignment, you will focus on a broad solution to the social problem based on systems-based thinking.

    Instructions

Based on what you have learned, determine whether an action research or program evaluation approach would best facilitate change regarding the social problem and systems you have identified (policy advocacy, policy change, program development, program implementation, community organizing, and so on). Choose one approach focused on change specific to your social problem. Use systems-based thinking to help in conceptualizing all of the important organizations and people needed in that change effort. How will you evaluate the results of the change effort? Be explicit in how you will address diversity and oppression in that change effort. Lastly, part of this assignment is to identify personal biases and assumptions that are being made about the population and social problem of focus.

Address the seven main bullet points below that correspond to the rubric criteria for this assignment:

    • Describe a strategy for change.
      • Describe a specific strategy that you believe will bring change, specific to your social problem of focus.
      • Specify your choice of action research or program evaluation to engage the system.
      • Your strategy may also focus on policy change, program implementation, and so on.
      • Explain in detail what your change-based strategy will look like.
      • Identify the individuals, organizations, coalitions, and stakeholders should be at the table in that effort.
      • Explain how you will engage the community and participants.
      • Explain how you will collaborate with relevant organizations.
      • Identify what kinds of steps must be taken to succeed in that change effort.
    • Justify the choice of a particular intervention.
      • Cite relevant literature in arguing for your strategy.
    • Propose a plan to evaluate the proposed change effort.
      • Include a timeline, the specific outcomes of focus, and specific details on how you will measure the outcomes.
    • Explain one’s personal biases relative to a social problem.
      • For this criterion, you are asked to write about yourself; therefore, writing in the first person is appropriate for this portion of the assignment.
        • Identify and explain what personal biases you have specific to your social problem.
        • Identify and explain the assumptions you are making about your social problem and proposed change effort.
        • Explain how your biases and assumptions might affect the work you are doing to create change.
    • Explain how one will address diversity and oppression.
      • Identify the issues of diversity, oppression, and social justice that must be considered specific to your social problem.
      • Specify which strategies you will employ to address those particular issues.
    • Write content clearly and logically, following the rules of grammar, usage, and mechanics.
      • Grammar refers to the basic rules for how sentences are constructed and how words combine to make sentences (such as word order, case, and tense).
      • Usage refers to correct word choice and phrasing, particularly with regard to the meanings of words and phrases.
      • Mechanics refers to correct use of capitalization, punctuation, and spelling.
      • Write in the third person (except as noted above), adhering to conventions of academic tone.
    • Apply APA style and formatting to scholarly writing.
      • This includes the formatting of the title page, page numbers, margins, use of in-text headers, appropriate in-text citations and references page.

    Additional Requirements

Your assignment should also meet the following requirements:

    • Paper length: 710 content pages plus a title page, abstract, and references.
    • Font and font size: Times New Roman, 12 point.
    • Sources: Six scholarly sources published within the last 7 years, cited and referenced in current edition APA style and format.

  • Week 7 Discussion: Medicalization as a Tool for Social Contr…

In last weeks discussion, you were asked to define medicalization, analyze its impact on a real life situation, and explain how it can be both a good thing and a bad thing. You learned that homosexuality used to be medicalized, and was even in the DSMThe Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Illness, also known as the psychiatric bibleas a mental illness.

This is not merely a matter of semantics. Perspective shapes behavior, sometimes with dramatic consequences. Many people have died because their bodies and behaviors were medicalized, and their race, ethnicity, and even behaviors were treated as an incurable illness. To frame an aspects of ones being as a medical problem implies that there is a medical solution. If your race, for example, is defined as an incurable and contagious disease, the solution may be framed as death. This was the reality in The Holocaust of World War II. Medicalization was the ultimate tool of social control.

    _________________________________________________________________________

This weeks discussion has 6 parts:

    1. Lets start with some short definitions (like maybe 20 words each): (3/4 point, including the below sub-questions)

    • What is the medical model of disability?
    • What is the social model of disability?
    • What is the relationship between disability and impairment?

    2. What is the relationship between medicalization and disability? (1/4 point)

    • Think carefully before answering this. Your answer should be concise and precise.

    3. How was medicalization used as the rationale for the extermination of ethnically and culturally marginal (Proctor 184) people in The Holocaust? (~300 words) (1 point, including the below sub-questions)

    • Who was included in the group of people who were ethnically and culturally marginal? Name as many categories as you can.
    • What was the role of those in the medical profession?

    4. Do you believe medicalization is a tool for social control? (1/4 point)

    • Why or why not?
    • At least 100 words, but really as many words as you want.

    5. What is an interesting question, either on this topic, or linking this topic with another in our class, to guide discussion in this week’s forum? (1/4 point)

Your initial post should be about 450 words long.

    6. After finishing with your own post, also post a comment on at least two of the posts of your classmates. You are welcome to post even more than 2 comments! Thoughtful, positive, questioning, and educational comments, which help to develop the group conversation, can both help others engage the subject more deeply AND improve your own grade! (1/4 point for each comment=total 1/2 point)

Make sure you’ve properly cited, including page numbers, paragraph numbers, and/or time stamps for all in-text citations.
