In last weeks discussion, you were asked to define medicalization, analyze its impact on a real life situation, and explain how it can be both a good thing and a bad thing. You learned that homosexuality used to be medicalized, and was even in the DSMThe Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Illness, also known as the psychiatric bibleas a mental illness.
This is not merely a matter of semantics. Perspective shapes behavior, sometimes with dramatic consequences. Many people have died because their bodies and behaviors were medicalized, and their race, ethnicity, and even behaviors were treated as an incurable illness. To frame an aspects of ones being as a medical problem implies that there is a medical solution. If your race, for example, is defined as an incurable and contagious disease, the solution may be framed as death. This was the reality in The Holocaust of World War II. Medicalization was the ultimate tool of social control.
