Our physical bodies are our objective presence–except for those who know us well, they’re anything but objective. When you meet up with an old friend, what’s your first, and most important, experience of that friend? I’ll bet it’s not their body. When I meet up with people I have extended personal experience with–whether or not I like them, whether or not we’re close–I don’t experience them as their bodies, and sometimes I even feel like our bodies get in the way of our communication and emotional connection. How about you? How have you found that bodies relate to intimacy and identity?

    ______________________________________

This weeks discussion has 5 parts:

    1. From what Bishop argues, how do intimacy, identity, and pre-existing relationship shape our understanding and experience of others’ bodies? Include 2 examples from her article. If you use quotes from her data, explain them. (1 point)

    2. Now use either O’Grady & Khudov’s article OR Game’s article to answer the same question: how do intimacy, identity, and pre-existing relationship shape our understanding and experience of each other’s bodies? (3/4 point)

    3. In your experience, does really knowing another person (or animal, if that’s a more immediate example for you) shape and mediate your understanding and experience of that individual’s body? (1/2 point)

    4. What is an interesting question, either on this topic, or linking this topic with another in our class, to guide discussion in this week’s forum? (1/4 point)

Your initial post should be at least 300 words long.

    5. After finishing with your own post, also post a comment on at least two of the posts of your classmates. You are welcome to post even more than 2 comments! Thoughtful, positive, questioning, and educational comments, which help to develop the group conversation, can both help others engage the subject more deeply AND improve your own grade! (1/4 point for each comment=total 1/2 point)

Make sure you’ve properly cited, including page numbers, paragraph numbers, and/or time stamps for all in-text citations.
