Outreach & Community Feedback Assignment

Objective

After completing your interview and participant observation fieldnote and analysis, you will share your work with people outside our class and collect their feedback. (I have attached my interview and POF below) (you can actually share the work with 5 people or make up text messages, email chains etc.)

This assignment supports the courses global engagement goal by connecting sociological concepts to real communities. You will practice engaging with local, global, international, and intercultural perspectives on the issues we study.


What You Will Do (Overview)

Share your project with people outside our class
Collect feedback from at least 5 community members
Reflect on that feedback using 3 course readings
Submit proof of outreach, a written reflection, and a bibliography

You will submit all of this as one package. Please try to use as few documents as possible. It is best to include everything into one document

What You Must Submit

1. Proof of Outreach (Required)

You must show evidence that you shared your work and received feedback from at least 5 people (per student or per group member).

Acceptable proof includes:
Screenshots of text messages or group chats
Audio recordings
Video recordings of short (mini) interviews

You should share your interview and participant observation fieldnote and analysis with these participants.


2. Required Questions for Community Members

Ask each participant the following:

1. Connection to Themes
How can they relate to the themes in your project, or what experiences do they have that connect to them?

2. Engagement with Your Work
Have them:

  • Answer at least one question from your interview assignment OR
  • Respond to a specific scene, quote, or moment from your fieldnote

3. Suggestions & Critique
What do they think you should add, rethink, or explore more deeply?
What might you have overlooked?


3. Reflection & Analysis

Minimum: 500 words per student

Your reflection should:
Analyze the outreach feedback you received
Connect that feedback to at least 3 course readings or films
Reflect on how community perspectives shaped or challenged your thinking


Recommended Structure for the Reflection

Discussion / Reflection / Conclusion

Select at least three responses from your outreach
Group them into three themes or patterns

For each theme, include:
? A quote or specific moment from your interview or fieldnote
A quote from a course reading or film
Your own explanation and analysis of the connection

Be sure to address:
What participants connected with most
How outreach feedback related to course themes
What you would improve if you did the project again


4. Bibliography

Minimum of 3 sources
Must come from course readings
Provide FULL citations in ASA (American Sociological Association) style
