CD 124 week 12

Assignment Task: Observing Development in Early Childhood (Ages 3-6)/ Preschool Observation

Early childhood (ages 3-6) is a period of rapid growth and development, where children reach major developmental milestones. Observation is a key tool for assessing progress, planning curriculum, and identifying any atypical behaviors that may require early intervention. Developing strong observational skills takes practice, and this assignment will help you learn how to observe, what to look for, and how to interpret your findings in the context of child development.

Observation Guidelines:

  1. Choose Your Observation Method: (5 points)
    • Preferred method: Conduct a live observation at a licensed preschool, focusing on one child in a group care setting. You can call and make an appointment at the Cuyamaca CDC (619-660-4660) to do a preschool observation or any other licensed childcare facility. *sites will be verified and this method typically produces more points for this assignment.
    • Alternative method: Watch the provided preschool videos and focus on one child (some videos may already highlight a single child for observation). *this method typically produces fewer assignment points due to its limited capabilities of fully understanding the surrounding the child is in and other factors of the child within the environment.
  2. Take Detailed Notes: (10 points)
    • Use the format provided in the Infant Observation Assignment to record raw, objective observations about the childs behavior, interactions, and developmental progress. This part of the assignment is typically hand written.
  3. Analyze and Reflect: (15 points)
    • Use the provided guideline to analyze your observations.
    • Consider physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development.
    • Reflect on what your observations reveal about the childs developmental stage, skills, and interactions.

This assignment is designed to help you develop a deeper understanding of child observation and its importance in early childhood education. Take your time to observe carefully, document thoroughly, and analyze meaningfully.
