Studying and the overjustification effect
How do you motivate yourself to study? Do you think about how studying will lead to a better grade? Or is the challenge of mastering new material enough to keep you going? The overjustification effect predicts that if a student focuses on studying in order to get good grades (extrinsic motivation), rather than on studying for the satisfaction of learning and mastering new information (intrinsic motivation) that student might discount the intrinsic reasons for studying, and study only in order to get good grades. Instructions:
- In your own words, respond to the following prompt. For full credit, you need to respond to all four parts of the prompt, writing at least two or three sentences for each question, and showing that you can apply the idea to your specific personal circumstances.
- What is the greatest extrinsic motivation that you have for studying for this class? Do you think this motivation will be effective in getting you to study for the duration of the semester?
- Based on what you learned in the video, explain the overjustification effect and discuss whether or not you think the extrinsic motivation that you are using for this class might lead to the overjustification effect.
- Think of a time when you were intrinsically motivated to study and explain you felt an intrinsic motivation in that particular situation.
- Discuss at least one way to make sure that you avoid the overjustification effect when studying for this class. Be specific about what steps you would take (what might you say, or think, or do?)
- Review the information inthen reply to at least two classmates posts. Your reply should include at least one of the following. Respond to the prompt by Thursday 4/16, replies need to be posted by Sunday, 4/19
- a comment about how your classmate’s strategy is similar to or different from yours.
- a suggestion for staying motivated that is based on information from
- a question about their post or an answer to a question that they have raised
Grading policies
- You are expected to post your initial response to a discussion board prompt by the due date indicated on each discussion board. Late submissions will not receive credit unless you have a valid, documented reason for missing the due date.
- You are also expected to reply to at least two postson the discussion board by Sunday, 4/19. These replies are part of the assignment. You will not receive full credit for the assignment unless you have a meaningful reply to at least two posts.
- Making a submission that is substantially copied from an outside source without acknowledging the source is plagiarism. This is a violation of the student code of conduct. You will receive a zero for the assignment and may face other consequences, depending on the severity of the violation. The syllabus describes in detail the consequences for plagiarism.
- After the discussion board is completed (day of the unit test) I will assign grades for the discussion boards based on your initial posts and any corrections that you have made based on feedback from others in the class (me or other students).
