Discussion Thread: Letters to a Birmingham Jail

In his Letter from a Birmingham Jail, Martin Luther King Jr. dared to question some widely accepted beliefs and practices regarding the treatment of Black Americans. He acted upon his strong values based in Biblical principles concerning injustices around him. As a result of his moral courage, he was assassinated five years later in Memphis, TN. But civil rights progress began.

Students will use specific examples from at least 3 sources from your Module 6 textbook readings and presentations to write 2 paragraphs. After reviewing MLKs Letter and surrounding sources, articulate what specific injustices MLK was addressing and what he was advocating, including his plan for peaceful protest. Using specific Scriptures to ground your work and frame your worldview, discuss how Christians should respond to questions of injustice in the world today regardless of culture, creed, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status.
