Case: Intervention for Luis’s Aggressive Behavior
Luis is a 10-year-old boy with a severe intellectual disability who attends a special education class with 12 other children. The teacher and their assistant manage the group and conduct individual sessions with the students.
Luis exhibits aggressive behavior: he frequently pulls his classmates’ hair. To manage this behavior, the teacher has implemented a time-out procedure, where each time Luis pulls hair, he is taken to a chair in a corner of the classroom for 5 minutes without access to toys or interaction with his classmates.
After several weeks of intervention, Luis’s behavior has not significantly decreased. It is observed that, although the teacher and their assistant consistently apply the time-out, they rarely praise the students or provide positive reinforcement when they exhibit appropriate behavior.
The school principal requests a treatment evaluation to determine if the behavior reduction strategy is being effective or if adjustments are needed.
