Voice chat in online gaming is one of the few places with very limited regulated speech. Screaming obscenities, trash talk, hate speech, discrimination, insults, etc…at each other is very prevalent and almost nothing is off limits. Most gaming communities are the opposite of “Woke”. Anything you put in writing on text chat is easily censored, monitored, and punishable. Voice chat is rarely monitored and censored. Some love the fact they can say whatever they want. Others who may be looking for a “safe space” to game have to disable all voice chat features. Though games come with ratings, there are no age specific game lobbies. This means a child can play with adults and hear and take part in any conversations. Obviously, this has created controversy.
Question:
Should online voice chat continue to be free from censorship and exist “as is”? Why or why not? If you think not, what would you suggest?
