Discussion Board: Final Project Blueprint

Taking inspiration from the portraits weve learned about over the course of the semester, you’ll be creating your own self-portrait for your final project in this class. For this week’s Discussion Board, youll be sharing your first draft of your Final Project self-portrait with the class.

As a reminder, the Assignment description for the Final Project is as follows:

For your final project, youll be taking inspiration from the portraits weve learned about over the course of the semester and creating your own self-portrait.

On the final day of class, you will post your final self-portrait to a Discussion Board (no replies required) so that your work is visible to everyone in the class and so everyone in the class can see your self-portrait.

Please choose ONE of the following options:

1) Create

Create a self-portrait. Consider the self-portraits that we have learned about so far and, taking inspiration from the mediums, visual techniques & symbols used, compose your own self-portrait in a medium of your choice.

Directions – Create

  • Select your preferred medium and create a self-portrait.
    • This medium can include painting, writing, sculpture, photography, etc.
  • Pair your self-portrait with an artists statement.
    • In at least 500 words, explain how your work of art is a self-portrait.
      • What was your experience working with this medium? Was it challenging or easy to work with? Have you used this medium before?
      • What message is your piece sending? How does the medium influence this?
      • Highlight at least 3 symbols & 3 visual elements/design principles that you included in your work to communicate your specific message.

OR . . .

3) Research

Put together a DETAILED 10-slide-long slideshow highlighting at least four creatives who work with portraiture or self-portraiture. Then, highlight at least one work by each creative working with portraiture/self-portraiture. Be sure to select creatives or works that you relate to or are interested in (this is important so that your statement can bring things back to you–making your research a form of self-portraiture). These artists must be creatives we did not learn about in class.

Directions – Research

  • Select at least four creatives who work with portraiture or self-portraiture and at least one work by each creative. (Be sure to select creatives or works that you relate to or are interested in)
  • Create a 10-slide long presentation on PowerPoint or Google Slides that showcases your research. Use our weekly lectures as a reference for this:
    • Title slide
    • Bio: for each creative, include a page with a bio and a photo of the creative
    • Works: for each work of portraiture/self-portraiture, include a photo, the title, the year & a description of the work.
    • In your slide show, address the following:
      • Which symbols, visual elements & design principles can you identify in each work?
      • How is this a portrait or a self-portrait
      • Does the work have an intended message? How does it influence our reception as viewers?
    • On your last slide, include an artist statement of at least 500 words explaining how your research topic is a self-portrait and how it relates to you.
