Lab 11: Marine Phytoplankton

Instructions

In this lab, we will investigate the role of phytoplankton in marine ecosystems by exploring their biology, environmental requirements, and ecological significance. Using a web-based platform, we will sketch and characterize different phytoplankton species. We will identify and compare various types of diatoms and dinoflagellates through interactive tools and by examining a real water sample from Mission Bay. Finally, we will explore harmful algal blooms (HABs), including how they are detected and monitored using online maps and data visualization tools.

After completing this lab you will be able to:

  • Understand the biological features and ecological roles of phytoplankton in the ocean.
  • Identify and compare diatom and dinoflagellate species using web-based tools and microscope analysis.
  • Describe and compare real-world water samples containing diatoms and dinoflagellates.
  • Investigate harmful algal blooms (HABs), their impacts, and how they are detected using online maps and databases.
