In this assessment, learners will deepen their understanding of negotiation theory by observing its practical application, recognizing effective and ineffective approaches, and reflecting on how strategic negotiation decisions impact outcomes.
Instructions:
In this assignment, you will choose a video that illustrates a real-world negotiation (from a business negotiation, political debate, historical event, or a popular media portrayal) and analyze how the negotiation strategies and techniques demonstrated in the video align with the principles, steps, and strategies we have explored this week.
Find a video that depicts a real or fictional negotiation, one that demonstrates key negotiation tactics and strategies in action. This could be from a documentary, interview, negotiation training video, news coverage, or even a scene from a movie or series. It could be a business negotiation (merger, sale), a conflict resolution, a crisis negotiation (law enforcement), or political negotiation (peace treaties). Consider the following questions while you watch the video:
- What is the context of the negotiation?
- Who are the parties involved?
- What negotiation tactics and strategies can you identify being used (BATNA, bargaining/problem solving, implementation, Getting to Yes).
- How do the negotiators handle obstacles or challenges during the process?
- Is there anything you would have done differently if you were involved in the negotiation? Why or why not?
