Noli Me Tangere

Noli Me Tngere is the first novel of Filipino national hero Jos Rizal, published in Berlin in 1887. The title is Latin for “Touch Me Not,” taken from the Bible (John 20:17).

Written in Spanish, it exposes the “social cancer” of the Philippines under Spanish colonial ruleincluding abuses by friars, government corruption, and the suffering of ordinary people. The story follows Crisstomo Ibarra, a young man who returns home after studying in Europe and tries to build a school to improve his country, but faces strong opposition from powerful figures.

The novel played a key role in awakening Filipino nationalism and is considered one of the most important works in Philippine literature, required reading in schools today. It is followed by its sequel, El Filibusterismo.
